Our son got home and has already been out twice with friends. This is going to be a whirlwind Thanksgiving. Are your college kids starting to come in for the holiday? Is anyone staying on campus? S's school shuts down the dorms over the break, leaving only one or two open, so anyone remaining on campus must move for 4 days. The dining hall is closed during that time, too.

| When we sent da' boy 3,000 miles away, we knew there was no way he could come home for Turkey since he's on the quarter system and has finals in a couple of weeks. Altho dorms are "officially" closed, kids can stay over in dorms with permisssion; particularly important for internationals . Food halls closed as well. Some kids go home to friends's families, other kids "camp out" in the dorm loungesrs. They setup a wide screen tv, stereo, order pizza et al from local fast food joints, and sleep on mattresses tossed on the floor.

Glad to hear that your son is home, WestrnMom! Add our kid to the roster of home for the holidays. H picked him up at the airport about 10 p.m. and S had called a friend by 11:30 and went out with her. So, I agree, it should be a whirlwind holiday, although S is home for all the holidays now.
His trimester is done, and he thinks he did fine in all his classes. We heard more about the game of "Assassins," his work/study job (tech support for faculty and staff), his friends, his classes, the food, etc.
He's very happy to be home, but he said that leaving school this time felt a lot like leaving home in September, "leaving the familiar," as he put it.
I'm looking forward to hearing about everyone else's kids coming home to roost for at least a few days!

| My son has been home since Saturday but I have seen little of him. He has been sleeping late and going out with friends at night. I get up early and go to sleep early. The semester has gone well. The adjustment has gone well though boys don't talk much about these things. The only thing my wife has managed to glisten (she is much better at this than I am. It also helps that she is a nightbird and sometimes sees him when he gets home) as that he has not made any solid friends. He is finding the academics challenging. He knows how to structure a paper but his professors are demanding deeper source material. I assume that is all a part of teaching freshman.

Back from the airport this morning. DD took a 'red-eye' for her first visit home since leaving in August. She is now napping before the dental, eye doctor and study abroad immunization appointments I was able to arrange.
I was surprised by a lip piercing; I thought we were over that stage when she let the eyebrow close up .
She gave me the longest hug in the airport pick-up lane (flight landed early,so she was waiting), and seemed so, so happy to be home. She said, 'I like my room this way' after finding a bit of rearranged furniture. It wasn't a surprise but it was the first time she saw it.
We have been informed that she will be trying to see 'everyone at some point'. That was really why we splurged for cross country flights for Thanksgiving freshman year.

My son is also home. Picked him up last night at the airport. He lasted about an hour at home before heading out to see his girlfriend. He sighed and told us he has so many people to see that he doesn't know now he will do it all. Plus a paper due Monday morning. I reminded him we paid for the ticket home and expect him to at least give the family a bit of his time.
We got a brief mention of what we expected. He said that he feels it is a waste of money to spend so much on general ed courses that he could be taking for basically free at the city college. It really comes down to missing the girlfriend. We pointed out it isn't the same experience. He admitted that he has made some really good friends at school and is loving his experience. We gave him the thought that he would stay with it for the year and reevaluate for next fall. Hope the breakup occurs.
Our oldest is not coming home this year. She did spend a week with us this past month. We are grateful for the time we get to spend with each of our children. They are growing up so fast. Can't believe my baby is in Middle school.

DD gave us big hugs and an hour of her time in good conversation after arriving home, but then the texting took over and she was out the door. But mom is sharing some "getting our toes done" time today.

Well I spoke to DS today. He is cleaning up the fraternity house and coming home tonight. Husband told him if he got a better offer for Thanks giving dinner (grandma is not known for her cooking) he should take it. Guess he didn't get one. He and a friend are going to a Jazz concert in OC with H & I Sat evening. I think he will go back to school Sat night after the concert.
Have great time with your students.

LOL, Lynda. This way you know that you guys are the attraction, not the food.
I'm taking a breather after getting the turkey in the oven. Yesterday was the real cooking marathon, with two pumpkin pies, two loaves of bread, ginger-pickled beets, mashed potatoes, roasted root vegetables, and cranberry chutney. Makes today with only brussels sprouts, stuffing, and the bird look like a walk in the park! I'm looking forward to having S at the T-day table so we can hear more about school. He's been out with friends almost the whole time, with breaks for taking me grocery shopping, picking up lil sister, and picking up forgotten items from said grocery store for me. Happy T-day everyone!

Did you all have a good Thanksgiving? Ours was just family, which was fun. We have a houseful of kids today, some of the high school friends are getting together for the first time since August. They are so happy to see each other. S saw his other friends when he first arrived home.

It was a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving. Yes, our college-student was "different," but in a very nice way. He is as thoughtful as ever, still loves cherry pie, our goofy cat, mac-n-cheese, but there is more "texture," and I sense a certain, practiced, patience with us, that wasn't there before. He's growing into his own person! And I like him.
Can't wait to see what comes next!

Glad to hear that you had lovely Thanksgivings! Ours was great, with just us and two graduate students with their husbands. (This is one of our Thanksgiving traditions, hosting students.)
S seems happy and content. He's seen lots of his friends but has also spent time with us. He and H brought home H's lab computer (24 in. screen) to play Civilization IX (or whatever number it's on now).

Ours was nice also. Grandma who usually hates cooking shows and cook books, LOVES Rachel Ray-and many items were good. Just family but very nice. Son is heading back to school today (house is school's but open because it is in same category as apartments). We will meet him and GF for concert tonight. I am just finishing up his laundry. The washer is next to the stove and the dryer is in the garage in his fraternity house-I suppose that is not as convenient as mom.' '

We enjoyed a lovely dinner with two other couples and everyone's children -- high school through college age. My son, now a junior in college and living in an apartment for the first time had asked what he could bring and decided to make cranberry sauce from a recipe I'd used before. Great acclaim was given to him and I kept my mouth shut, revealing mothing! The other college junior is in the same situation re: apartment and brought a vegan apple pie she had baked. They are getting so grown up! *sniff*

| We enjoyed Thanksgiving at home. My side of the family came over to join us. It was great to have our college son at home. He leaves tomorrow, but will be back home in 3 weeks.

Well, we are getting an extra day with my daughter. Seems I accidentally booked her to return tommorrow, rather than today. We didn't discover this until we showed up at the airport at 5 am this morning for her 6 am flight. She is not a happy camper as she will be missing a test in one of her classes and doubts the teacher will accept "Stupid Mother" as a make-up excuse. But, secretly, another 24 hours of her presence is like a gift, even if she is in a rather surly mood. Last edited on Sun Nov 25th, 2007 09:08 pm by CarolynLawrence

Carolyn, I feel your D's pain, but I can't help but laugh. Freud would have felt vindicated by your mistake. Enjoy your extra 24 hours!

Have to laugh at the Rachel Ray reference - my sisters-in-law were arguing over how long to cooke the turkey - one took the traditional 180 degrees approach, the other argued for the Rachel Ray/Food Network-sanctioned 161 degrees. Unfortunately, we were at the 180 degree's house, so the turkey was a tad dry.
I loved hearing my daughter complain about how poorly her 12-year old cousin was treating her mother! I think she has forgotten about her own tween attitude.

Carolyn,
Wow, I don't envy you your two pre-dawn trips to the airport in as many days.
It is easy to see how that happened, though. The schools post that the break ends at 8:00am on the 26th and we put that date in our brains as the return date.
Enjoy your bonus!

I wish I had an excuse, but the truth is it was a simple case of rushing to get the reservations done and not paying attention to the details before hitting "buy." D's mood has picked up now that she's had a chance to call all her friends at college and tell them about her mother's stupidity. Nothing like proving how dumb your Mom really is to bring cheer to the holidays.
By the way, Firefly, in another proof of mother stupidity, I accidentally set the temp on OUR turkey to 400 degrees. It was about an hour later that I realized what I'd done. I turned it down to 165 for a few more hours and it came out as one of the juciest birds we'd ever had.
Totally off subject, but one of the funniest things I've ever read was a newspaper article a few years back about holiday turkey snafus. My personal favorite: a young woman from the philiphines married a US navy guy. Their first Thanksgiving back in the states, she wanted to impress his parents who had come for the holiday. She shooed her nervous husband out of the kitchen. A few minutes later he heard this loud thumping coming from the kitchen. Opening the door to investigate, he found her holding a large black garbage bag which she was thumping on the floor. That's when he noticed 15 boxes of shake and bake on the kitchen counter. She had no idea how to make a turkey, but she'd found the shake and bake in the store and adapted the directions accordingly. Apparently it was a delicious turkey.
