D got her first direct mail invitation to check out colleges today. One from Northern Arizona University and one from Azusa Pacific. I'm not sure how either got her name since she is only a sophomore and hasn't been to any college fair or signed up for any information yet. The one for Azusa Pacific had a reply card that with pre-populated with information that was more than 5 years out of date (an e-mail address from a company I worked for 5 years ago)
Anyway, she was flattered to get them, especially since both started by saying her academic record caught their interest.

Two possibilities as to how they got her name:
Either she took the PSAT this year
OR
Her high school had her fill out a "survey" from the National College Research Institute, which is basically a company that turns around and sells student data to colleges for early recruiting. They also sell names to loan companies and other, less above board marketing firms.
If she didn't take the PSAT this year, ask her if her school asked her to fill out any sort of form about her college plans. A lot of schools have NCRI for the scam it is, and have stopped having their students participate, but others haven't yet caught on - the "offer" they send to schools make it sound like they are only asking for research purposes, and they promise a "report" for high schools letting them know what their students are planning. But, bottomline: it's mainly a marketing database company, with somewhat suspect intentions (they have been investigated by several federal agencies over they years).

| A third possibility is that she took the PLAN test (the pre-ACT), although I understand this is not common in CA.

| They gave our 8th graders the pre-ACT last year - that was new for us here in Oregon.

| The ACT people also have a pre-pre-ACT called EXPLORE (explore, plan, act -- get it?) which is commonly given to pre-HS students and normed for 8th graders. Any chance that is what they took? EXPLORE does not have the same interest-matching section as PLAN nor, as far as I know, do they release the names of EXPLORE test-takers to colleges. PLAN, on the other hand, is usually administered to HS sophomores and is intended to guide them on future curriculum decisions. Both EXPLORE and PLAN are structured in an ACT-lite sort of way. Yes, it was the EXPLORE! Thanks Descartes, I couldn't remember the name of it.
She took the PSAT this year as a 9th grader just for kicks. So I guess we'll see the onslaught of mail & email before too long, because I *know* they release that info to college mailing lists.

She did not take the PSAT this year, and I am not aware of her taking any other standardized tests unless they were administered in class and she did not mention it.
What I found strange was the reply card prepopulated with information from when she was in grade school. If she filled out any interest forms she would not have used that information. The only place I can think they got that is from some old emergency forms I filled out for the school district.
Oh well, I'm sure there are more to come. She is not interested in either of the two schools, so we will just wait for others.

Today my son actually got something from a college that caught his interest - a foam puzzle from Missouri-Rolla. Now if some college would just send him something in code...

The mail has really picked up this week. We are now getting 3-4 solicitations a day. They are mostly from smaller schools (Colorado School of Mines ) and a lot of Religous schools (mostly Catholic). I was thinking the list may have come from her Church youth group, but I can't imagine the Church selling their list.
D got very upset with me when I mentioned that I wondered where the list had come from. Her comment 'mom, why can't you just accept the fact that these schools might want me!'
