| My son received one cold call from a school not on his radar at all. (I don't even remember what school it was.) He politely told them that he would consider them, thanked them for the call, and then hung up. Then he promptly forgot about it.

Well, one of Macalester's football coaches called my son again yesterday. Son was even more annoyed this time. He wonders if Mac isn't calling every prospective male who can walk to ask if they'll play football.

Just out of curiousity, Carolyn, what if your S said that he was interested in playing football? Would you expect that this might increase his chances of acceptance? If he was accepted, what would then happen if, upon arriving on campus, he told the coaches that "Thanks, but I'm no longer interested." Any consequences to this? Obviously for scholarship recruits there is a contractual tie between scholarship and participation, but at DIII, where there are no scholarships, I wonder if there are non-legal sanctions that can be brought to bear.
Obviously the same scenario could play out for non-sports recruits (musicians, actors, etc.), too.
I am by no means suggesting that anyone do this. I, like you, would recommend integrity over gaming the system. But I am just wondering how susceptible the process is to such manipulation, especially when it appears their needs invite a certain amount of manipulation.

Some years ago, my nephew was guided by me to apply to Dickinson College. My nephew was a center and the Captain of his HS football team. He wanted to play in college, but he knew that he was only ok as a linesman and he certainly was not very heavy. At 17 - he was 6' 1" and about 190.
I steered him to Dickinson (and a few others as well) in particular because (1) they had a new coach, (2) the Washington Redskins Pro football team used Dickinson for their summer camp and had just refurbished the gym and football field, but most importantly (3) Dickinson had just finished a season where they were 0 and 9, That is no wins and all losses. For the previous five years, I think they had won less than 10 games in toto. {of course the fact that Dickinson was an excellent LAC was basic to the recommendation to my sister and her son}
I knew that if a young man was breathing and wanted to play football at Dickinson, this new coach was going to be interested. SInce my nephew had excellent grades and good SAT scores, the coach was very happy to meet with us, give us the grand tour and go over to Admissions with my nephew.
Needless to say, my nephew is now a proud alum of Dickinson and he played on a couple of winning teams in his Junior and Senior years.
From what I have heard, Macalester is very similar to Dickinson's football program (in the early to mid 80ths). Any reasonably intelligent, warm body who was remotely interested in playing football would be sought by the coaches.
As to the commitment, well they are amateurs at Dickinson and Macalester and therefore if the young man refused to go out for football, the coach would just have to accept it and move on. No change to the admission decision is possible under Div !! or !!! rules.

My DD got a call from a small all-women's college in Virginia telling her that she automatically qualified for $13K a year in merit aid.
I have no idea WHY they found her, HOW she qualified for this merit aid, etc.
I know she'd never in a million years consider either an all-women's school nor one in a tiny rural southern area. It was flattering to get the call but not something she'd follow up on ... can't imagine why they'd call (and call back) other than the fact that she was actually BORN in Virginia (though we don't live there anymore) and I suppose some of her paper work on file might show place of birth?
The school's nickname is the "Fighting Squirrels" though so I kinda wished they'd at least send her a T-shirt.
