Lesson one:  Do not use the backspace key in the preview mode or the message will post as a blank. :?

Five years ago, we successfully used a list serve to research a dog breed.  Dog and family are happy.  So I determined, as DS is now a sophomore, it was time to find a cyber community that discusses the topic of college.

I didn't want just any community, though.  What attracted me here was the openess, the knowledge of the administrator and the community (including links!) and the willingness to tamp down the "admissions hysteria."    My kind of place.  :D

I'll still be lurking in the shadows for awhile, until I can make my way through the large volume of info already here.

A bit about us.  DS in a sophomore in a public HS, taking a full load of APs (he says because the students are better) but taking time to smell the roses doing water polo/swim and mock trial.  DH is a math professor at a major university in the area (so yes, this one will be on the application list.)  I'm in government finance.  We try to balance out the "analytics" with music, art and world travel.  DS will try out one of CTY's on line math courses later this summer.

So,  getting a good education is a big deal in this household.  (I'm also a trustee on the local education foundation.).  Our educational backgrounds, in case it's useful to anyone on the board (although we must admit our attendance was back in the Ice Ages of the late 70's/early 80's):

SoCalMom:  University of Washington (undergrad, BA and grad, MPA)

DH:  University of Washington (undergrad, BS)  MIT (grad, PhD)

Happy searching everyone.  And remember the line I read from the Time magazine article (linked from this very site):

College is a match to be made, not a prize to be won.

Welcome SoCalMom!  It is great to have you onboard. It sounds like your son is ahead of the game with his attitude and your support, but I know you'll get lots of great input here.  Welcome again!

By that standard, my college attendance was shortly after the dinosaurs died out . . .  or maybe I'm one of the last of the breed.;)

Welcome aboard.  Don't be bashful about asking questions and then reading the "archive."

Welcome SoCalMom,

I think you will find that not only are we non-hysterical (well, most of the time.......there are those crunch times!), but we are also kinda fun. You sound like you will fit right in.

Lots of dog lovers here, too.

Welcome, SoCalMom!  My kids are also amazed at the things I didn't have (or had, like record players!) in the ages losts to the mists of time.

My high school junior son also does Mock Trial/Model Judiciary.

I admit to a smitch of hysteria when the time was right, but I'm cool as a cucumber now that all three kids are finished with decisions. Aaaaah.....

Welcome from NorCal person.

Who has two kids through the admissions process for undergraduate. Remains to see what D will do next year, slight possibility she will go on for her masters in cognitive psych/neuroscience, but she has ruled out the Ph.D. academic route.
