Well my daughter finally shamed me into joining, instead of lurking. I admit it, I've been lurking for over a year, reading the posts regularly, which have been enormously helpful to me. I've learned a huge amount from reading this website and am very grateful for all the advice I've gotten even if it wasn't specifically directed at me.

My daughter is a junior at a suburban public high school in Ohio. She wants to go to a small liberal arts college, where there is a great sense of community. I am skeptical that we will be able to afford this, even with some merit scholarships/financial aid, and I really don't see borrowing that much, when she plans on grad school too. We've visited several colleges already, many based on your suggestions, and they are all starting to blend together.

I look forward to your support and advice and giving back the same, now that I'm uncloaked!

Welcome Tondaleo! We're all eager to hear how your daughter's college search goes.

(And if you're so inclined, posting your impressions of school visits in the College Reviews section is a great way to keep them straight in your mind!)

Hello Tondaleo,

Nice to meet you!

Our hopes are much the same as yours for your daughter -- "She wants to go to a small liberal arts college, where there is a great sense of community".  Good wishes to them both!

Regards,
Kareni

Welcome, Tondaleo! My son also wants to go to a small liberal arts college with a great sense of community. Maybe you and I will end up at a Parents' Weekend together.

I look forward to hearing more about your daughter's college search.

CardinalFang, We met at Beloit and Grinnell a few weeks ago. Then you were on to Macalister and we were going to Truman State and Knox. I will try to write some reviews next week, and more specifics about my daughter's college search. She just made National Honor Society yesterday, but doesn't think it means anything. The seniors came in throughout the day, telling one or 2 juniors at a time that they were accepted. She didn't hear until 5th or 6th period and felt tortured and anxious all day, and would have been pretty upset if she didn't get in. But now that she's in, it's no big deal, she says.

Oh, hi, Tondaleo!

Tondaleo and I met in the admissions offices at Beloit and Grinnell. My son loved Beloit and hated Grinnell. Tondaleo's D was just the opposite: she didn't take to Beloit, but loved Grinnell.

CFang and Tondaleo;

Your children's reactions to Beloit and Grinnell are the perfectly clear reasons why visiting the colleges while school is in session is so very helpful. ;)

No kidding. Before we went, Beloit was at the bottom of the list of colleges Fang Jr was considering, and Grinnell was in the middle. Afterwards, Beloit was at the top (but there are more to visit) and Grinnell was off the list.

I don't think she hated Beloit. I just don't think she liked it as much as I did or as much as Grinnell. But there were things she didn't like about Grinnell too. So we're still looking. And she doesn't remember some of the ones we started with, so plans on returning on her own to spend the night. We go to a visit day at Ohio Wesleyan in a week, which may be too close to home for her, but certainly not so close that I'd be dropping in on her.

Hi Tondaleo, glad you spoke up. :)

I have always found it interesting how "small liberal arts colleges" can be so different from each other, even though their underlying purposes and philosophies mirror each other. Yet, it does seem that each LAC has its own small culture, and sometimes what is a perfect fit for one person isn't for another. And sometimes we parents can't even tell the subtle differences that seem to drive our kids' opinions. :)

Anyhow, glad you have joined the discussion, and hope you will find this a great place to chat as your daughter moves forward.
