Hello all,

I’ve been reading posts here for about a year and have enjoyed
the genuine feeling of helpfulness that I’ve observed. I’ve
recommended this board to friends and family who have children of
high school age, and I’ve also recommended it on a couple of online
bulletin boards.

I have a daughter who is a junior this year. She is
homeschooled and has been throughout her high school
years. The term homeschooler seems a tad misplaced
this year as she is taking several classes at the
local junior college and a couple more at a resource
center for homeschoolers. Her current desire is to go
to a four year college (as a Freshman not as a
transfer student) and major in Latin. I will be
posting more about her specifics on the Which colleges
are right for me or my child? forum.

I’d like to thank Carolyn for providing this venue,
and I look forward to interacting more directly with
you all.

Regards,
Kareni

Welcome, and so glad you decide to de-lurk. Everyone here will be rooting for you and your family as you go through the college application process. it's a pretty challenging process, and you'll find a lot of helpful friends here, lead as always by Carolyn. Good luck!

Yay! Another homeschooler!

Do you find that some homeschoolers in your area are taking junior college classes in preparation to apply to college as freshman, and others are taking the same classes, but planning to transfer? The community college where Fang Jr takes classes has quite a few homeschoolers of both types.

California is pushing to require all homeschool parents or their agents to have a teaching credential. It is all over the news around here. There are quite a few homeschoolers on this board, actually.

Welcome! I'm also impressed by her decision to study Latin.  Colleges with Lating departments will be delighted to receive her application.  I don't homeschool but I have worked with a few students who have.  I admire families who do that.

Welcome, Karen, glad to see that you got through OK.

I will have some ideas for you on the Latin -- although, the major typically pursued is not Latin but Classics. My son studied both Latin and Ancient Greek in high school, and one of his requirements for college searches was that he would be able to continue studying Latin (and maybe Greek) in a strong Classics department, so I may have some ideas for you there, depending on what your daughter is looking for!

Thank you all for the warm welcomes!

I've posted a longer post in the Which colleges are right for me or my child? forum which will answer some of the questions you posed.

Cardinal Fang, you asked "Do you find that some homeschoolers in your area are taking junior college classes in preparation to apply to college as freshman, and others are taking the same classes, but planning to transfer?"  Yes, indeed.  Both kinds take classes at the local college.  Our intent is that our daughter enter college as a freshman.  We are definitely considering her classes at the college as part of her highschool courseload.

Carolyn, I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts.   My daughter is aware of the Classics major being a likely way to go.  Her experience with Greek has been minimal (her Latin teacher once offered a six week mini-course in Ancient Greek after the AP exam), but she may have the opportunity to take a full year class next year.   Though she has also made noises about the possibility of taking a class in Arabic.  Time will tell.

Regards,
Kareni

I was going to post on your other thread, but for some reason it was locked (???). Carolyn and others listed some great options, so I only have a few to add. Franklin & Marshall, Davidson, Furman, Hamilton, Kenyon, Trinity, Wesleyan, and William & Mary come to mind.

I'm not too familiar with the Classics programs on your D's list, but Bryn Mawr has a superb program, as does Brown. Wake has a small-but-decent program, and it also offers languages like Hebrew and (occasionally and on request) Egyptian, Akkadian, and Ugaritic.

I don't know if your daughter is at all interested in Duke, but I'd be more than happy to talk/brag about the Classics department. :D

Warblers, first, hi -- good to see you!

Second, I'm not sure why or how the other thread got locked, but I have opened it again. :)

Warblers,

Thank you for your suggestions:
" ...  I only have a few to add. Franklin & Marshall, Davidson, Furman, Hamilton, Kenyon, Trinity, Wesleyan, and William & Mary come to mind."

I can see I'm going to be busy looking into these and the other suggestions.

Kareni
