I am the father of two daughters; a high school senior and an upcoming 9th grader. My oldest daughter, as you might imagine, has been very busy this year apply to colleges and hunting scholarships. She has been accepted to three colleges thus far and I am helping her with research when I can.
A little about my girls. Due to my job, my daughters have received a pretty unique education. They have attended American schools overseas in Saudi Arabia and Shanghai, China. They have also attended an all-girl catholic school in Ireland. After about 8 years overseas, we are back in our home state of South Carolina where my eldest is attending her senior year.
My oldest daughter excels in the humanities and is excellent in english/ creative writing. Her first goal was to become an international journalist. However, that has changed over the past several months. Now she is leaning toward a double major in psychology and perhaps english. Her present dream is to eventually get involved with the government, perhaps with the FBI. She has applied to USC-columbia, Clemson and Furman. As stated, she has been accepted at all three.
My youngest will just be starting the 9th grade next year. She is very artistic in nature and she has recently applied to a special fine arts center program in our area. She is not as academically driven as our eldest. Just as smart but not as devoted (as of yet). Therefore, we are hoping that getting her into a more artistic environment will spark her enthusiasm for learning.

Welcome, engrad! You've found a supportive and informed community for the college admissions process and beyond.
Regarding your youngest, did she go on any of the college visits with your oldest? My husband took our son (now a college freshman) on a college/boys' road trip the summer after his freshman year in HS. After that, the abstract seemed to get more real for our son, and, although he'd been a good student previously, he made straight As his sophomore year.
Sometimes I think that being academically motivated comes later (at least, I'm hoping that that's the case with my youngest!)

limner... I did take my youngest on the USC-columbia tour and the Clemson tour. She enjoyed the USC but it was rainy & cold during the Clemson tour so she stayed in the visitor center with her mother.
My eldest was invited for an interview for the Hollingsworth scholarship at Furman. We will probably not take my youngest for that since it is during a school day. However, we will likely tour the campus prior to the interview and all will attend.
