Hello

I am a mother of a senior and have looked through is wonderful froum for quite a while. I have learned so much about the American college sys.  We are international living in East-Asia. My son attends international school. SAT, GPA are all excellent. He loves learning about different cultures and is pretty talented in learning  languages. Besides English he knows fluently Korean, Chinese, Japanese .  He has studied Latin virgil indepently and did excellent on the exam.  because in our country hardly anyone  knows what Latin is or what Classic is , it was very hard to find a teacher to help him with his independent study.  His saids learning and interpreting  Latin stimulates his intellect and wants to pursue Latin and classical cultural studies  at college

WE were very disappionted when he got his deferral last month from YALE. We are still hoping for good new in April:)

Welcome, JJmom!

It sounds as though your son has excellent qualifications. He must be sad to have been deferred at Yale, but with his talents and interests there are many schools that would be glad to have him attend.

We'll all hope for Yale for him in April, but, in the meantime, which other schools is he interested in?

Hi,

thank you for your reply!

well, Yale was his love(I think it still is!).  This love developed when our whole family lived in Hamden CT for about two yrs. before comming back to our homeland when my son was in 5th grad.  He thought he was destined to Yale and so worked hard in school and sacrificed many spleepy nights doing what he thought would increase his chances at Yale.

He applied to HPS and many more selective schools along with matches and safties!

When he got deferred he concluded that because he was also a strong candidate;) for  HP where their classic dept. is very strong(#1) compared to yale(around #14)that they were not sure that he will maticulate if got accepted. And Yale being very conservative this year decided to defer him:P:D  ( He applied as classics major)

So that he would feel less hurt I told him I agree with his theory:)

Welcome, JJmom, glad you have found your way here. :)

What other US schools did your son apply to? I will keep my fingers crossed for him!

Like your son, my son is also a classics fan. He'll be heading to Reed College next year, which has a wonderful classics program. In fact, every single student, regardless of major, is required to take a year long course that studies the greek and roman classics.

Welcome  JJMom:

Small world, back in the mid-70ths, I lived in Hamden (on School Street right behind the Police Station in the heart of town). :)

What is your home country?

Like others, am curious as to the list of colleges lyour son has selected.
