Hello.

I have a weird nickname "Adge" pronounced like 'age.' I guess that's what you guys will know me by...I'm living in the odd land of Louisiana...LOVE the culture and the soul, NOT so in love with other things.

I'm an African-American Female (YAY double minorities, lol) and I have a screename on collegeconfidential (sorry Ms.Carolyn if that's like an ad). Oh yeah, I do NOT have an accent but I call people Ms,etc. Lol.

I decided to join this forum because I LOVE the fact that people here encourage fit over prestige(lots of hidden gems) and you really ENCOURAGE people here!:D I LOVE the ideals and the intent of this board...

Not trying to write my whole life story but I didn't include that I'M A SENIOR!!!! And am pretty far along in the app process(with MUCH APPRECIATION of these internet poster people)...and I'm applying to Mills College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Goucher College, Simmons College, one in-state safety and one in-state private(starts with a T - I somewhat regret that app:?) After this semester I'll have an approx 3.6 gpa on a 4.0 scale(YAY upward trend!)...and I'm a Gifted/Talented student (talented visual art) that LOVES to DANCE!!!!:D (MODERN/contemporary, jazz/lyrical, ballet, etc.) I ALSO LOVE community service and am on the Youth Advisory Board of an org called VolunTEENS!

I had somewhat of a stall in my course selection this semester and hope to redeem myself next semester:? (chose to be sort of lax about this term,:() I look forward to next semester's courses and will try to get through this terms exams alive:shock:,lol.

I consider myself to have a Flaubert-ist sensibility;)...I try to be mindful of tact in all that I say and all that I write on public forums such as this and other places...I look forward to participating here.

I hope I haven't left anything out...if I did, just ask away.:D

Welcome, Just*Adge! :) Good luck with your applications.

Looking at your list of schools, is it fair to say you have a preference for women's colleges? If so, could you share with us why that is? I think many of us would like to hear why they might appeal to a young woman of today, like yourself.

Thanks.

Sure, I'd be happy to share...originally, I had no preference or specific intent to choose women's colleges. I just looked for places that seem to exude a certain sense of empowerment; these just happened to be women's colleges. BUT, after further investigation of said colleges and talks with adcoms and such, I was SOLD! lol Of course my list includes more than just women's colleges, but they are the obvious majority...Also, my intended major (either Women's Studies or a cross between Women's Studies+Sociology+Psychology=self-designed major,YAY!) seemed to be the strongest at women's colleges...

My friends have always described me as a budding feminist and honestly, I didn't really want to have to worry about girls behavior around boys (I'm hetero so I know they can be SUCH A HUGE-gantic DISCTRACTION,lol)...and I always knew that there would be time in life to meet guys, BUT EDUCATION 1st! :D

I hope that was helpful...thanx for welcoming me  :).

Welcome, Just*Adge,

I found what you said about empowerment very interesting.

Your list looks very well targeted for fit, and hopefully for selectivity. I'm guessing Goucher and Simmons are safeties?

Anyone who has a "Flaubert-ist sensibility" and loves community service should do fine!

Welcome Adge! It is nice to see you here. Your list has some of my personal favorites on it, and I'm sure you'll do well.

Did you consider Spelman at all? Talk about empowerment! That place puts it in the water. But, you have a great list as it is. It's funny but my daughter refused to look at single-sex schools but when we were up in the San Francisco area looking at other schools, I insisted we stop by Mills. It was a Saturday and we weren't signed up for a tour. But we kind of drifted around. When we went into the art building, a teacher came out and started chatting with my daughter, and by the time we left, she admitted that Mills was a pretty cool place. I have several young women at the school where I work who are also applying to Mills this year, and I'm excited for them.

One thing I'll say is this: your personality comes through so wonderfully in your post. If you manage to do that in your essays, you'll be ahead of the game! I'll look forward to following your progress over the next few months.

Welcome Ms. Adge :D:

Nice list, your grades are good, don't let them fall, this term is most important as the schools on your list will want to see the midterm report in January.

My D2 visited Smith and MHC - liked both, accepted at MHC but financial aid package was scanty.  Goucher is my W college.  Nice school, is in the suburbs of Baltimore (Towson) now a CO-ED school, in same town as Towson State and Morgan State Colleges.

Carolyn is right (as usual) your personality comes across very nicely!

OK, *Adge, I've just gotta know: did you follow-up on Carolyn's advice or did you have Spelman in mind all along?

Just curious.

Actually, I didn't have it in mind all along but it was reiterated everytime I talked with someone that I should probably apply...everyone from my mentor, to my sister-in-law, to teachers, and even Carolyn suggested it...and it's really funny because I ended up dropping MHC, Smith, and Goucher - I just fell in love with Spelman, everything about it and everything it represents. I can't WAIT for this fall!:D

Adge, First, congratulations on all of your acceptances, but especially on Spelman. It is truly one of the finest colleges in the country, and, from having gotten to know you just a bit over the past few months, they are very, very lucky to have YOU in their freshman class next year as well. CONGRATULATIONS!
