Hi!  I have found this site to be so beneficial in the entire process of working to get our daughter, Caroline, into the best college...for her!  Our son is a sophomore at Virginia Tech.  He applied to only 4 schools, no real reaches for him, so the process was more simple.  Max graduated in the top 10% of his class, debate team state champions, with a strong gpa...so that was easy!  Caroline had a bad sophomore year, with two C's, (broke her thumb and tore a ligament...two surgeries, cast on writing hand, pins that hurt all the time and lots of physical therapy) but came back strong in her junior year with all A's which brought her gpa up to a 3.55.  She is also student council vice-president, captain of her cheer squad, in nhs and latin nhs...took AP psych last year and has AP Gov, AP Language Arts, and AP Bio this year.  These are the only "honors/ap's" she has had, though her courses were all academic.

She has struggled with SAT's...had her with a private tutor for not quite a year now.  We have figured out she freezes and panics on the test.  Her highest scores so far have been 520 math, 530 english and 540 writing...she has two 9's on her essays.  She did just take the ACT as well as the November SAT and felt much better then ever before after taking the sat...we had taken the "pressure" off...stopped the tutoring and didn't talk about it at all.

She is applying to: George Mason, ECU, Christopher Newport, James Madison, Appalachian State, Virginia Tech, UNC Wilmington, and NC State at Raleigh.  I know if she doesn't get her SATs up or a great score on her ACT, NC State, Tech and maybe UNCW are out...but she has very strong teacher recommendations, as well as great EC's so we have those fingers crossed!  She is interested in majoring in Biology, but not sure what she would do with that in terms of a career.

I'd appreciate any input or suggestions!  Thanks to Carolyn and everyone for all the grrrreat advice!

Welcome. My son attends JMU and loves it! It seems to have gotten more competitive for admissinon, but gpa is considered more heavily than SATs/ACTs. They are trying to slowly become larger, so I see a bit more students getting accepted over the next few years (just a guess on my part though). We toured UNC-W and I really liked that school. It is smaller than JMU. I had the feeling that it is slightly easier to get into, but I could be way off base. If she does not get in to those, I have read about so many happy students at ECU, and Appalachian State. Are you from VA, and if so, how will your D feel at a NC public where only about 18% are OOS?

Commenting on the issue of out of state students at NC State.  A good friends daughter is currently a freshman there.  I have never seen a kid more mature or ready to attend college.  She loved the school, loved orientation, loved everything about NC State.  She has now decided to transfer after her first semester.  She said that the campus empties out on weekends and there is no one around.  I don't know the details and of course, this is only one experience but it is something to think about and research.  I know it has made me look at state schools in nearby places more closely, just for that reason.

Hi Momsgarden, and welcome.  Some kids just find those SATs a hurdle, but keep in mind that her test scores are ABOVE the national average, and that they are also within range for the schools on her list. She has good grades (make sure she uses any opportunity on the application or in recommendations if required to explain the dip sophomore year) and she's an active and involved person. In light of all of this, I think Caroline has a reasonable list of schools. If you wanted to add one or two schools just as backups, have you looked at Longwood, Randolph-Macon, or Lenoir Rhyne?

I think that this is the crazy-making season for parents of seniors. We all get a little nutso wondering about worst case scenarios. I know I've had my own share of what ifs coursing through my mind in the past week. But, 99.9% of the time, things will work out, whether we worry or not. At least, that's what I keep trying to tell myself. :P

Believe Carolyn,
She is right, things do work out.  I just wish I could get my brain to tell my stomach to stop that worry feeling it does every once in awhile.
