I wouldn't worry about the Common App personal statement topics, because "Other" is always one of them. It's more important to write an essay that talks about something significant to your kid, with the usual caveats, of course.
Some schools do have more specific topics. I'm not sure when they come out....probably late summer.

Well, some kids probably find the prompts helpful, and I suspect my d may be one of them... or the prompts may inspire them to get creative.. Last edited on Wed Mar 5th, 2008 12:28 pm by Mrs. Aardvark

If you can persuade your kid to get creative and actually write essays over the summer, we will collectively award you the Queen Mom crown, I think!

My D received a nice email from an admissions person at Oberlin mentioning specific things in her essay, so someone does actually read the things! It couldn't have come at a better time as she has been feelinglike she wasn't going to get in anywhere she applied. I think because her friends all know what hey're doing now, she has felt a little left out. A couple of them are waiting like she is until the end of March. I hope the Oberlin email was a good sign.

I'd consider that a good sign. But then, I've always expected your daughter to have lots of happy news ahead.

Oh, OW and the other parents of hs seniors, I am anticipating (not feeling!) your pain! My son is just waiting to hear if he's been accepted to a fabulous month-long summer program, but that's not quite like waiting for college acceptances!
We'll be exactly where you are in one year.
I'm not looking forward to it!!!
I am predicting much good news in just a few weeks for you!

I'm bumping this thread up as there are a lot of good answers and useful information on essays in here. Parents of rising seniors -- please feel free to ask questions here about essays and related matters. I'm sure our members who have already survived the process will be happy to share their children's experiences!

Leftcoast's first post on p. 1 of this thread is a pocket-sized gem of writing advice. My advice is to cut and paste it into an e-mail to your college applicant.
