I was just looking at a website that says they operate on a rolling admissions basis and early admission applications need to be in by Dec 1.  I understand the concept of rolling admission but is there a start date that they begin accepting applications or do they accept applications at any time once the school year starts?  I've been wondering about this for a long time so thanks in advance:)

Usually there is a start date where they start accepting applications. Some as early as mid-summer, others start in September or so. Each school is different though, so ask each particular school when they will start accepting apps.

Thanks.  I was on the School of Visual Arts website and did not see any mention of a start date.  I found that strange and will make sure to ask admissions.

If your child is going to apply early in the process here is something that we learned the hard way:

When my older son applied to schools he missed one "priority application" (earlier notification, waiver of application fee). He missed it because he applied to schools early in the process and his application crossed with the priority one. I want to correct for this mistake with my younger son. I plan on having my son contact every admissions office to find out if they offer a priority app. (if we don't know) before we send out a common app. or their regular application. BTW, with our older son they did "roll" his reg. app. over to become a priority application for early notice of acceptance, but did not refund the application fee!

NACAC has been pushing to get all colleges to agree to a common start date in September, but that hasn't yet panned out. Best bet, as indicated, is to ask the individual schools directly when they will start accepting applications.

NEMom:

Not necessary to make any calls.  I suggest that your son in the fall of his junior year get on the website - request information - fill out the data card and after doing that, email to the area rep for NJ that he is a Junior and interested.

95% guarantee that he will get mailing and emails from the school during the remainder of the Junior year, in the summer and thruout the senior year. including any priority application data and he will remain on their prospects list (near the top).

Jocelyndad, my older son did either as you suggest, or he called admissions to get on the mailing list. The problem my older son had was that he sent an application a bit too soon. It would have been better to wait for the priority application. We were just a little too anxious to get the apps. out.

NEMom, you're making me feel like a rookie. What exactly is a "priority application", why do the exist, and who gets them?

Thanks!

Some colleges offer "priority applications" (may go by other names, too).  Tulane is the most notorious for offering these.  It is generally a shortened, expedited version of the regular application.  It may not require an essay.  It may get quicker consideration.  Colleges will send these to students who have expressed interest, visited, have high stats, or some other criteria.

this year (continuing as of last friday), Drew University has been pressing a Priority Application via email on our D3.  Must have had at least 15 of these offers.

The College of Wooster started one this fall as well.  NEMom, D3 had sent her Common Application to Wooster before October so she did not send their Priority Application, however no fee problem for D3 and they considered her CA at the same time with the Priority Applications.

As Fireflyscout said benefits included no essay, no fee, and earlier notification of their decision. (Wooster will notify RD applicants starting in March, but Priority Applicants are being notified inearly February).

What it is IMO is a marketing tool to increase applications, really not a special search for any individual or group, but more applicants in general.

In our case with some of the public schools, the applications had a "priority deadline" which meant you had a better shot at merit scholarship money if the app was received by a certain date, even though the school practices rolling admissions!

University of Maryland's priority deadline of Dec. 1 meant that a decision would be made in Feb. rather than March or April (for those who submitted apps past the deadline). Sort of like EA, but they don't call it that.

They all do things differently, which is why it's important to find out the details for each individual school.

Descartes, sorry, I just saw your post. Fireflyscout and Jocelyndad explained what the priority app. does and its perks pretty well.

Jocelyndad, did your D send in an app. fee with the common app. to COW, or was it already waived (ie: because of a campus visit)? Some schools send out the priority apps. just a bit late in the season, IMO. I am surprised about Drew. Everything that I have read about Drew leads me to believe that the NJ kid will not do as well with the financial package. It seems like the average applicant from OOS does much better financially at Drew, so we have not intention of visiting the school.

Wooster waives the application fee if the student applies on-line via CA or Wooster's Priority Appliction. :)  So frankly their 'Priority Application' only offers a faster response and a no teacher recommendation requirement.  Which IMO would be a negative to a candidate with borderline stats etc.  Where a Teacher's positive remarks might have made a difference - that + is absent on the Priority App.  So I am not a fan of this PR gimmick, since the CA is so easy (comparibly) to complete and the Teacher Recommendations are sought anyway for other schools, asking the teacher to copy one more form and mailing it is a no-brainer to me.

D3 had visited Wooster prior to her application as well.

Re: Drew, it is located in the lovely city of Madison (The Rose City) where my bride happily accepted my proposal of marriage, so I have very fond thoughts of Madison.

We have been on Drew's campus for a number of events over the years, in particular their performances of Shakespere's plays.

Drew is a good LAC, but costwise it is pricey and for our D's too close to home.  So neither has contacted or visited (officially) Drew.  Howsoever, they have D3 on their radar screen and have bombarded her with e-mails and mailings since last summer.

ALthough she has informed them to stop sending, their is a disconnect somewhere and they seem to strive to be the eastern counterpart to Wash U in St Louis (another lovely school where S3 graduated after 4 wonderful years) in the mass communications department. :?

Jocelyndad, Drew is supposed to be a very fine school. It just is not the place for us, since we are from NJ. WUSTL is an incredible school, and I think it is much more difficult to gain admission. Our neighbor applied there ED to have a bettter chance at admission. He was admitted and he loves WUSTL.

Thanks about telling me about the COW priority app. I wonder if my son decides to apply whether he should use the PA and include a teacher rec anyway.

I've never heard of priority application.

And...would someone please tell me what school WUSTL is? I have seen it all over the place and can't for the life of me figure it out.  It's obviously not on the West Coast. :D

Thanks, Mominva. People always have nice things to say about that school and it has bugged me that I don't know where they're talking about!

And I've always called it "woostel" in my mind. Am I  in the majority, or a minority?  I mentioned it to someone else the other day, and they had no idea what I meant! :)
