S is applying to the University of San Francisco via the common app. They have an optional essay regarding a Jesuit education.

I'm curious if it's truly "optional" or if he should do it. He put on the common app that he is unafilliated with any religion.

TIA for any advice:)

I think "optional" essays are really mandatory.  Students should show their interest  in every way possible, and the "optional" essay is certainly one way to demonstrate sincere interest.

From a colleague who received a Jesuit education I know that  the focus is not strictly on the religious experience. One of the hallmarks of the Jesuit method is a focus on intellectual questioning. Maybe a little Internet research into the elements of a Jesuit education would disclose those elements that resonate with your son?

That is what I thought. The prompt is thought provoking and requires the research that you've suggested. S has printed out their mission statement but is having a really hard time with this essay.

The focus on intellectual questioning is something that he can identify and work with. Thank you!

I once had a Jesuit priest and professor as an expert witness on ethics in a case. He gave his direct testimony. Then opposing counsel asked an open-ended question. Forty-five minutes later, opposing counsel got to ask his next question. The judge, laughing, said, "That's what you get for asking a Jesuit 'why' !"
