At our public high school the kids are asked for $1/ transcript request/GC rec form. This poses a hardship for some of our kids (one of whom I am mentoring). Do other high schools charge fees like this?

My oldest went to a magnet public and there was a limited number of free transcripts (maybe 4) then there was a fee for any above that (I think $2.50 in 2001!).
My other two went to a private school, which did charge an administrative/copy fee per transcript (~ $4 in 2002, ~ $6 or $7 in 2006).
I think each place had a waiver for students who qualified for free or reduced lunch or were on FA.

Wow, I never heard of a high school charging for transcripts. At my son's high school and the school where I work there is no charge. But, I suppose that cuts down on kids requesting transcripts they don't really need. I think I would take the tip from Mominva's school district and have the student explain the hardship to his counselor. A phone call from a supportive mentor might also help. My d's high school charges $2 per request, but that also covers the postage; we just gave them small envelopes, unstamped, with address labels. So I didn't that was so bad. There is a confidential process for waiving those fees as well.

My sons' Catholic high school charged $2 per transcript. It covered mailing and copying costs, I guess. Most kids at that school only apply to about 3 colleges so it's not a big inconvenience.
The GC said that S2, with 10 transcript requests, was second only to one other kid several years earlier that applied to 21 colleges!

| My high school charged a one-time fee of $5 and would then send as many transcripts as needed.

Public school - $5 apiece for all official transcripts, no exceptions
Private school - unlimited transcripts, no fees

| A national service has popped up, Docufide (docufide.com) to send out transcripts electronically. Ours chool charges $5 for their service, but only for final transcript. College apps receive a hardcopy transcript along with the GC rec at no charge.

| My kids' public magnet high school gives the first 5 transcripts free, then charges $2 for any more after that.

thanks everyone, I think I'll call the Guidance dept and ask why the kids who get waivers for the SAT/ACT can't get waivers for transcript/GC rec fees charged.

Our school doesn't charge a fee, but they do require that you supply addressed, stamped envelopes for all transcripts and recs sent.

| At our public high school, official transcripts are one dollar. Unofficial transcripts are free.

I think ours are $2 (public high school). Our district has a pretty broad waiver program -- pretty much any student eligible for free or reduced lunch whose family checked the "OK to include my child in other district fee waiver programs" box should have a fee waiver with little or no effort.
But if they don't, this is pretty much the kind of circumstance that many civic organizations in the community would be happy to fund. $100 or $150 would pay for a lot of transcripts, and I'd guess that you wouldn't need to speak with more than a couple of organizations (Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, American Association of University Women, Lions Club, Jayees) before getting a yes.

Update! I simply called the head of guidance and he said that a waiver made a lot of sense and fixed it with the person who receives the fees. I wish it were official policy so it isn't just pushy parents who are able to get this.

| Our high school provides the first 4 free, and charges $5 for any others. I believe this is also an attempt to discourage students from applying to a huge number of schools. Frankly, IMO, the application and SAT/ACT fees, and the $5/ app. fee after the first 4 are not going to deter the middle class or wealthy student.

Transcripts are free while you are still in high school. After you graduate they are $2 a piece.

Our school charges $5 for the first transcript of each order, and $3 for any additional ones after the first.
(I go to a public school btw.)

Private schools can do what they want, but public high school transcripts should all be free. I had said that our high school does not charge, but I forgot something. They ask for a stamp- optional, but requested.
