| Is it really true that by applying early that it will increase your acceptance or is it a myth? So is there any reason besides knowing early whether or not you got in or could it give an extra push to the application. We are looking at MIT which is such a long shot so any little thing could help but would it make a difference since the deadline is very close and it might be a rush at this point? Any thoughts?

MIT does claim that EA applicants get accepted at a higher rate than RD (though, that does include the EA students who are deferred to RA and then accepted).
I do not believe that applying EA is what gets you in. It is more likely that kids who apply EA are generally stronger, and feel they have a chance.
The deadline is a week from Thursday. I believe the deadline for setting up an interview was last Friday (but I could be wrong). They strongly encourage interviews.

This year, we received 3493 applications for early action, 13% more than last year. We admitted 390 students, or 11% of the applicants. A similar number of students were denied, while those students in the middle, about three quarters of the applicants, were deferred to regular action for further consideration.
I am often asked why MIT's admit rate for early action is so low in comparison to the admit rate for early programs at other highly selective colleges (where the early admission rate is often much, much higher than the regular action admission rate).
The reason is that we are committed to admitting no more than 30% of our class during early action. We feel that the pressures to apply early are too high, and don't want to further contribute to that by leaving only a very small number of spaces for regular action, further pressuring people to apply early. Additionally, we don't want to penalize those students who apply regular action.

I think MIT's EA admit rate has actually been LOWER than the RD admit rate in some years.

MIT (at their info session) does claim the EA applicants get accepted at higher rates, if you include those that get deferred and accepted.
Who knows what will happen this year - Harvard has ended their early program. I suspect that a lot of the kids who would have applied early to Harvard and are the MIT types, will apply EA to MIT.

One advantage of EA is that if you get deferred, you have an opportunity to supplement your application; essentially the deferral is a form of feedback that conveys the message, "try harder."
I don't know about MIT, but my d. was deferred EA from Chicago and later admitted. In the interim, she submitted a supplemental essay and a graded writing sample which we felt filled a gap in her initial application. So from our point of view, EA meant she had 2 chances to have her app reviewed by the ad com rather than one.

| Thank you for your responses. I am still confused but realized before any decisions were made, the guidance counselor had to be contacted to see if they were able to do their part of the application in time. In fact they said we should apply early action and since an application to a state school was in the works that it would be no problem. Of course still waiting for a teacher recommendation so it might not go through in time but we are going to give it our best try. Thanks
