I'm jumping in first -- son got a call this morning (I hope he was mostly awake) and was told he was accepted to one of his "good bet" schools, Lenoir-Rhyne College in NC. Ain't rolling admissions great?

Congratulations to your son!!!  When I first saw the thread title, I thought you were being VERY proactive...now it's clear that your son was even more proactive.  As an aside, my daughter ended up deciding to attend her sure bet school.  I'll keep everyone posted throughout the year as to how it's working out.

Thanks, but for full disclosure I'm not sure how "proactive" he had to be. L-R sent him an "apply by XXX and we'll waive the application fee and the essay" letters. So pretty much all he had to do was request a transcript from his HS. He's a sort of legacy at the school as well (Uncle). Actually, I think it was the first campus visit he ever made -- I believe he was 3 years old :D

Congratulations! They sent my son a bunch of mailings last year. I don't know how we got on their mailing list, but they kept sending things to my H's work address and they thought that my H was the prospective applicant :)

Few questions-Did your S need to have letters of recommendation sent? How did he get them out, if they were necessary? Also, how were you able to send the transcript over the summer? I want to learn for my younger son. My older S just sent everything in by the end of September-he hounded the teachers to finish their recs ASAP!!!

I'm sure your Husband would have enjoyed Hickory :) They have been pretty persistent in their mailings and the occasional phone calls once my son showed some interest.

For L-R, recommendations are not required. You can send them if you'd like, but the application will be considered complete with or without them, so long as all the required documents have been received.

The transcript was easy -- my son's HS has the office staffed during the summer. Mainly a skeleton staff, but they are there and were able to handle the transcript request without any problem. My S actually has a few more applications out for schools that didn't require essays or recs. Getting the transcripts has been painless. Is your son's HS completely shut down over summer?

I'm not sure how we would go about getting recs if needed -- I suppose it depends on whether or not a teacher checks e-mail and voice mail over the summer.

No, our guidance department is open with a skelaton staff, and I know not all gcs work. The head of the department is in on certain days, select hours etc. , but not impossible. It might take a week to get in touch. We only contacted them when my son was in the active process, as you are now. I did not know that there are a lot of schools that don't require recs. I remember my S applied to some schools that only wanted one rec and emphasized that they would not read more than one.

Can you tell us a little bit about the L-R area, and the school's strengths? Notable majors?  Do you need a car, and how is transportation to an airport, amtrak etc.? How uncomfortable would attending be if you are not Lutheran?

NEMom, I sent you a PM with a detailed review (that I shamelessly stole from others), but to answer your questions briefly -- L-R is, like most colleges affiliated with the ELCA, fairly laid back about the religious aspect of their school. Definitely not in your face, and not being Lutheran shouldn't be an issue. Hickory is a nice town, the area around campus has some little shops, etc. but it is not a picturesque little college town -- still a large furniture manufacturing area. Transportation into Hickory can be a bit challenging -- once you're in the car, no problem since it's near I-40. But it's a good ways from a major airport (Charlotte is closest). Not sure about Amtrak, but it's not mentioned on their website at all. Business appears to be the most popular major.

Thank you. I sent back a pm. Also, I don't know what your S is thinking of majoring in, but I did not see L-R on the list of accredited schools for business. This accrediting association is the AACSB.

Congratulations!!!!  I just looked at the college web site and requested that they send information to my D.  She wants a school that participates in the American University Semester in Washington Program.  She is trying to raise her SAT scores by taking a prep class this summer so hopefully as a B student she will have more choices.

Congratulations to your son Iderochi! That first acceptance is wonderful, no matter where it comes from. Now your son can safely aim HIGH, knowing that no matter what, he is going to COLLEGE! (And, I have always like Lenior-Rhyne--- nice school, great people. NortheastMom, L-R's has particularly strong programs in business administration, communications and theater, sports management/athletic training, and education, especially deaf education.  But, it is a solid, well-rounded little school so many of their other departments are also good as well. It is also one of Loren Pope's "Colleges that Change Lives").

No, not COD either. Carolyn, you may have been thinking of St. Andrew's in NC which has a similar profile to L-R, particularly a good reputation in the area of kids with learning and/or physical diabilities.

That keep's Carolyn's ratio of right vs. wrong statements at about a zillion to one. :D

Well, this is really weird because I can not remember how I originally heard of Lenoir-Rhyne now. I always assumed that it was through CTL but it must be one of those errant strands of information that I picked up from the ethernet. It might have been through a search for deaf education programs that I stumbled upon them. I have, however, looked very closely at their website, and done google searches to track down more information, and it appears to be a very solid school. Congrats again to your son Iderochi, although I know there will be many more to come in future months for him as well.

Carolyn- you probably heard about it on CC through Orangeblossom. I think her son is going to be a freshman there.

Strangely with this thread I can open it through internet explorer or mozilla but not thru AOL. Whereas all the other threads open through AOL.

No, I'm the one that told OrangeBlossom to look at L-R in the first place. :)

By the way, her son will be attending McDaniel College, not L-R. And I KNOW that McDaniel is a CTL school. LOL!

Oh well, as I get older my brain cells get smaller.
