The days pass like molasses and my D asks about the mail every day. Tomorrow is Sunday so there will be no asking tomorrow. Email will be checked, though, as it has been every day. She is waiting on 6 schools. She was admitted EA back in December to Lewis and Clark, so she has a place to go no matter what! I want to thank Carolyn for pushing the EA as it has given some relief knowing no matter what she is going to college. Her friends have all found out about the UCs now, too.
In five days (March 21st) Bryn Mawr and Smith release decisions on line.
In five days (also March 21st) Dickinson supposedly emails everyone after 4 pm.
In nine days (March 25th) Occidental will be "sending their decisions". Whether that means email or snail mail is unclear from the email they sent.
In eleven days (March 27th) Oberlin sends their decisions (snail or email is unclear).
Grinnell is not supposed to release theirs until the very end of March, April 1st at the latest, so theirs could concievably not come until after April 1st.
So you think we will survive that long?
She has recevied tons of emails, letters, etc. from Oberlin and is excited about it. Smith has sent stuff, too. If she doesn't get in they are dog meat because it would be cruel to do that and not accept her. She has not heard one thing from Grinnell and thinks she is not getting in. Dickinson or Bryn Mawr each emailed once a long time ago.
We are emotionally drained. She has been messing with this for an entire year. At this point I don't really care where she gets in. I just want it to be over. But, we will have to make quick reservations and fly around if she gets into a couple of these.

If there's one thing that's guaranteed in this world, it is that time will pass. Comforting thought for those awaiting decisions, not so comforting for those of us getting older.
My daughter handled the situation by getting as busy as possible - extra volunteer work, joining the cast of a musical, watching Best Picture movies, etc. Which became a problem when it was time to attend Accepted Student programs because she was overscheduled.

Outwest- Aww, I know it is hard waiting, but soon it will be over and your D. will have a great school to go to.
Last year my top choice was Lawrence. They sent me tons and tons of mail, every week, all about their great programs and this and that, and then around the end of March, I got a rejection. Needless to say I was heartbroken, but I think everything works out for a reason. Now when I look on weather.com and see the very cold dreary weather in Appleton, I think I would be freezing my butt off their right now. :0)

| When it comes to college decisions, March really is the cruelest month. Yes, April may bring some stings of rejection, but at least you're not frozen waiting, waiting, waiting like you are in March. Firefly is right: time does pass, and in a few weeks, all will be revealed. I am keeping my fingers crossed for your daughter, and all who are still waiting for all of their decision letters to come in!

My S seems to be his usual stoic self, but I am slowly going crazy.
Every few days I ask him if anyone has heard anything. One of his friends was recently rejected by MIT and Olin. That's pretty much the only news since the ED/EA round, in which classmates were accepted to Cornell (2), Yale (1), Brown (1), Williams (1), Smith (1), Bowdoin (1), and Bennington (1) and undoubtedly a bunch of other places I haven't heard about because I don't know the kids/parents. Many of top students still haven't heard a thing. I haven't heard of anyone getting any likely letters.
The U of Rochester--the earliest of his schools--says they notify in "mid March." Apparently this usually means they release their decisions in three waves, which people say are random. They released a wave two Wednesdays ago. Nothing. Last week it appears they may not have released a wave. (They were on break?! Adcoms get to take spring break?! Don't they realize what they are doing to us? )
Meanwhile, our mailbox was taken out by the snowplow a few weeks ago and the remains are still embeddded in a 4-ft deep compacted pile, so I've been going to the post office every day to pick up the mail. It really is not good for my mental health!

I don't get this practice of sending admissions decisions in "waves." It's got to drive kids and parents straight out of their minds. What's the point? Syracuse apparently does this, but my S lucked out and was in the first "wave" last week. I feel guilty! Of course, fewer people would know about such things if we didn't obsessively visit online forums. My S has more certainty than most about where he'll be going, and he's feeling bad about going to school not nervous.
Hang in there, everyone!

Sending waves is difficult for those in the last waves. One of my Ds friends also applied to Smith and received her big envelope in the mail today. It included a STRIDE scholarship that has a first year student working one on one in a professors research project in their area of interest. I believe Smiths big scholarships like that one went out a week early. Her friend's Mom had called her cell and left an excited message. My D called right after school to see if she had anything from Smith. I had to tell my D that there was nothing today. I was worried how she would take it, but my D actually took it quite well. This evening she said her friend deserved the STRIDE and knows what she wants to major in already (my D is undeclared). "Besides," she said with a wry glance, "She is URM and I am not". LOL- she even knows the lingo. The thing that bugged her a little is that her friend doesn't even want to go to Smith. She applied to 15 schools (!!), most at her parents request. Half of them she could care less about. I know my D schools are all good fits. I remined her of that. If she doesn't get into Smith, there should be others!
Obssesively visiting on line forums is what is keeping me sane...

You know people are in admissions frenzy when the server for College Confidential says "too busy, try again later:.

Has anyone else considered the dreadful prospect that waitlisting could prolong this agony?
Outwest, I am beaming good thooughts in your direction today.

They must have worked CardinalFang and Consolation. Today she found out about three:
After months of drought since the EA round there has been nothing but sqeals around here this afternoon:
Smith: Accepted
Bryn Mawr: Accepted
Dickinson: Accepted
in addition: Lewis and Clark timed their FA package just right. It came today, too. They gave her a merit and met the rest in grant. The offered her a loan if she wanted it (won't need it!) and a $2400 work study if she wants it. They were awesome!
The FA of the other three come with the whole packet next week. Then she just has three left to find out about (Grinnell, Oberlin and Occidental).
I told her we will look at all the FA and she can pick three finalists that we will go visit/revisit. She said, "How about four?" I said, "well....maybe...."

OMG!!!
My D went on line to look at her acceptances again and Bryn Mawr's FA was posted!
There was much screaming. I think I'm going to faint.
I thought Bryn Mawr would be the toughest financially!?
We need to visit this school.
Wow.

Bryn Mawr is one that she put on and off her list for a year. She really liked their diversity pamphlet (wrote one of the supplemental essays about it) and their majors and programs and philosophy, so it made it back on. That and the fact that it has a coed school very close (Haverford), it's in a nice suburb near a historic city and is a beautiful campus (she is into pretty campuses) made her finally apply for sure. In the last few weeks she keeps looking at it over and over. Who knows? Their offer was so generous I think she should visit.

Consolation:
you bring up the dreaded "waitlist" prospect. D was deferred after applying ED to Vassar--it had been at the top of her list for over two years, so she was a perfect ED candidate. She handled the deferral OK (saying at least I wasn't rejected!) and was thrilled when acceptances from other schools started coming in. But now that it is almost time for the last of the RD decisions to come in, especially Vassar, I keep worrrying in the back of my mind about what if she is waitlisted. I think she really wants to just make a decision and get it over with, and so she would not stay on a waitlist. But then I worry that she would later regret not doing everything she could to get into her "dream" school. Luckily, I think she likes all her schools well enough that she will be happy at any of them.
We are going to Dickinson this weekend--they filled up and she got shutout on the accepted student overnight weekend for EA students that they held in February, so this is the best time we can come up with for her to spend more time on campus.
Her final three schools don't offer merit aid, so that won't be part of the decision. But the darn waiting is driving everyone crazy. Her younger sister, a HS freshman, won't even stay in the room if the word college comes up.

Congrats, outwest's D!
peabodie, last year Vassar was my d's first choice, but not strongly enough for her to apply ED (she was really concerned about Vassar's male:female ratio). She was waitlisted, and wouldn't believe that waitlisting meant that they thought she was qualified enough. But she decided to keep her spot on the waitlist "just to see." End of the first week in May, Vassar notified her that they weren't even going to touch the waitlist. Disappointing, but at least the wait was over.
Oh, and she loves the school she's going to.
Keeping my fingers crossed for your d, peabodie, and for all the rest who are still waiting!
