And, even more exciting news: one of my favorite students at my school also just became a Reedie today. The jokester called me at home and said, "Mrs. Lawrence, is it too late to apply to Redlands?" My heart sank to my knees. Then she said, "I hope so because I just go into Reed!" My son and her spent about five minutes wooting at each other over the phone and making plans to meet. And, I now will have TWO Reedies to visit next year.

Great news, Carolyn! Reed has always sounded like a wonderful school, and it also sounds like a great fit for your wonderful boy!

Carolyn,
Congrats to your son - my D finished her app to Reed this weekend, so who knows, they might be classmates. She was reluctant at first because of its nearness to home, but she was swayed by a visit to the nuclear reactor, and then by spending a day on campus.

In my day Reed had an informal 6-man tackle football team (one or two of the players were females, so I use the term "man" loosely here), complete with German marching band. A bunch of kids would march across campus making a LOT of noise including using garbage can tops as cymbals, tooting kazoos, and the like. This would be the announcement of the forthcoming game. To be honest, I don't know what happened to this "team," but I do recall one or two of the cheers from the sideline (too rude to mention here). One of my classmates describes this competition from my days at Reed in the Reed Oral History Project at item 3 here: http://web.reed.edu/reed_magazine/summer2007/features/C_A_FL/8.html
This is great news. Though I've been rooting for Reed I've mainly been rooting for Carolyn's son to find a school that really appealed to him. And so now, for Carolyn, LET THE DOUBLE TUITION PAYMENTS BEGIN! I wonder if they still do the Reed train up the coast for orientation. That's how I first got there, starting in LA, picking up more Reedies in SF, and on to Reed. We moved into our rooms, spent one night on campus, and then headed for orientation at Camp Westwind on the Oregon coast for a few days talking about college, Reed, and the Honor Principle (after all reading J.S. Mill's "On Liberty" as a discussion piece).

Nope. No football team any more. Part of the attraction for my (very) ex-player.
Tonight, a weird realization: I have gotten both of my kiddos into college. My work is done. And, their work, and lives, just beginning.
Mack, if they have a train, he'll be on it, bringing his well-worn copy of "On Liberty" with him.

Carolyn, what a wonderful Christmas present for your son! And for you too!
My son checked the EA/ED results at his school yesterday. Apparently, many girls got an acceptance, most of the boys got deferred. Go figure what that mean.

Carolyn, congratulations! I knew last year when you mentioned that was his favorite school that they would take him. I just knew it, can't tell you how. Maybe because he seemed like a perfect match for the school. I'm happy to hear your student got in, too. That shows you are a good counselor, to be able to step in like you did and make all that possible for your students.
I never asked, are you your son's college counselor or did he use his school counselor? (If I had to guess I'd say both)

LOL, Carolyn--she sounds like a Reedie, with that sense of humor.
Congrats to her, and jrmom, congrats to your D and to you! What great news.
All of you seniors and senior parents: this list is so impressive. And, trust me, it's almost more fun to be able to cheer on the seniors when your kid's a college freshman. You have that to look forward to.

Love it! While my DD awaits for the Jan. 31 notification one way or the other from HER first choice school (does any other school have such a late EA notification date???) she still frequently wears her T-shirt proclaiming "Berklee Football: Undefeated Since 1945"

Yes! University of Maryland's notification date is around Feb. 15. My son sent his application in SEPTEMBER (it was due Dec. 1). Seems like forever. Good luck to both of them.

I remember the tension at our house around this time last year -- it's such a relief when the first acceptance comes in! So, congratulations to everyone on all the great news so far!
Carolyn, it sounds as though your son is very confident about his choice and won't be experiencing any buyer's remorse, unlike some people I know Congratulations to him, and to you for helping him (and all of us) through!
(And if anyone does feel buyer's remorse after an ED decision, don't worry too much -- my son's went away after a while, and he's very happy to be attending his ED school now.)
