Congratulations to your daughter, Vderon! :) And thanks for the info on Mizzou. I would be highly surprised if my son goes Greek. It's just not him. I am glad to hear the J students are tight knit.

Hey, we've got a list going!

Hummingbird's S: University of Missouri-Columbia (Journalism)

Vderon's D: Southern Illinois; North Central College (Naperville, IL)

Congratulations to both acceptees.   I'm enjoying reading all your comments and can't believe it's been a year since my son was in that position.

I love rolling admissions- daughter admitted to Pitt Honors. She could do a lot worse- they have French Living floor and outstanding Slavic dept. Price is right too (I get tuition benefits...tuition would be 0).  Now onto the other applications...

Oh, congratulations! My son refuses to consider applying to Pitt's Honors program, despite my advocating for it. (At the mild level of advocacy which is acceptable, that is! :?)  He refuses to consider ANY honors college at a big school. He really has his sights set on 2000-5000 undergrads. The French Living floor would be right up his alley--he's won various French awards at the state and national level--as would their excellent philosophy program. Well, if he doesn't get into his SCEA school, perhaps he will be willing to reconsider...

Congratulations to your daughter. It must feel good to know that she has an acceptance from a really solid program like that in hand so early in the game.

McGill- for the obvious opportunities for French immersion- remains my daughter's first choice. She wants big, wants city. Doesn't like cold, but she said there is no difference between winters in Pittsburgh (she lived there for soph/jr years) and MTL. She might find out that is not quite true!

I've been told that there is some kind of special scholarship at McGill for students majoring in French--do you know anything about that?

McGill is the object of much interest for parents here in Maine, since it is a world class university with comparatively low tuition, even without any awards or scholarships, and not too far away.  My son isn't much interested in McGill because he thinks it is too large and too much of a commuter school. (I don't know whether the latter is accurate, but he's looking for a cohesive campus experience.)

Montreal is a very cosmopolitan-feeling city, and I think it would be a great place  to go to school. I would venture to guess that winters in Montreal might be more pleasant in that they get more snow and less cold rain and the like. The Quebecois pride themselves on doing winter well. (I remember reading in a novel about the Berlin airlift that Pittsburgh airport had the most days with bad conditions--rain, sleet, fog, et al--of any in the US. :))

How exciting for you and your kids.  Congratulations.

My daughter is at a college fair with a friend and her mom.  I was tempted to go on up but decided to let her handle it.  I can't believe we will be where your kids are just a year from now.   It was duct tape day today for spirit week.  She didn't understand why I found that so amusing.

Haw!  It was Victorian day for spirit week here, so my daughter wore the  (lovely, if I do say so myself) Victorian walking skirt, shirtwaist and jacket that I made for a role she had in a play last year.
