haven't been here in a while, what wonderful news everyone is sharing! congratulations to all -- and especially to Carolyn and her newly minted "Reedie"!
(I meanwhile have been going through duct-tape at an alarming rate, trying to ride out the last of the apps Orchestragirl is finishing up this week... )

Congrats, Bridie! I know a little about Vanderbilt because when my D sent off to that counseling group for dvd's of campus visits they accidently sent her Vanderbilt instead of Oberlin! LOL. We watched several minutes before we realized that something seemed very wrong....

Congrats to Canadian's S! Colorado College looks like a great place to go to school. Does he know what he wants to study?

Thanks, Bumpy,
Probably Environmental Science, because of all the great field trips CC excels in. As long as he is studying anything beyond skiing, I will be happy.

| Consolation - there's a pretty good chance my D will end up at CC in the biology department, because of the field work possibilities. For instance, they're doing a two-block course this year on the biogeography of Patagonia and the Andes in Argentina, with one block in Colorado and one in Argentina. How cool is that!

How cool.........EXTREMELY cool.
My S loves geography, has been his best subject, and I've been sorry that none of the LAC's he has applied to have geography departments (doesn't seem to be popular at US LAC's). He also likes biology. I will let him know.
Maybe he will meet your daughter there!

As a discipline geography has downsized over the years. While virtually every college will have such social science departments as economics, political science, anthropology, psychology, and sociology, quite a few have eliminated traditional geography departments, including such major universities as Columbia, Univ. of Chicago, and Univ. of Michigan.
But even where such departments do not exist, geographical -- more generally, spatial-oriented -- social science often survives within economics, remote sensing, urban studies, meteorology. So you may have to look for such cognate areas.

| On the geography question - not too far from CC is University of Denver (kind of LAC-like), which does have a geography department. I don't think they're close enough to actually take classes but there might be some cross-contact with faculty.

Congratulations to all! I just spent the last 20 minutes reading the board and smiling at all the wonderful accomplishments. Carolyn you have helped guide so many students to the making the right choice regarding universities....so it is only right that this Christmas you can celebrate Reed and Dartmouth. It seems so long ago that I was the one biting my nails until my D got home to open envelopes and now I am waiting for the text message saying she is about to board the plane in Chicago as she comes home at the end of her 1st semester at Valpo.
Carolyn you made the process easier for so many kids (and parents with duct taped mouths)
I will keep reading the posts and start asking questions again soon...graduate school is fast approaching for D1

Geography might be hiding out in Environmental Science. GIS has become the latest area of interest for geographers.
Congratulations to all the new additions. So many ED acceptances!

Adding my D's first acceptance -- Whitworth with honors and merit money! So now we know she can go to college somewhere! After the deferral at MIT it is nice to have an acceptance, even if it is a really different sort of place (but, both meet the "bottom line" criteria of women's swimming and colder than SoCal.)
