The applications glacier seems to be melting around here.  My S actually sat down at the computer in my presence and visited the Common App website and printed out the rec and other forms for his remaining Common App schools. Then he actually visited the websites of the three non-CA schools and printed THOSE forms! And he addressed the necessary envelopes himself, and put stamps on them! And he actually asked for more stamps and followed up on whether I had purchased them! It is even possible that he delivered the forms and envelopes and that they are not simply moldering in his backpack!!:D

He even looked at the supplements and applications and made notes about what essays he needed to write or tweak! Either the countdown to 12/15 is having some effect on him, or this is when he planned to do everything all along.  (After all, he submitted his EA application the afternoon it was due and claimed that that did not qualify as "last minute." Anything is possible with Mr. Cool.)

My son is now working on his fifth application and the good news is that it's getting much easier now. He was even able to write the first draft of the infamous "Why Swarthmore" essay in half an hour!

I think that part of it is that once you've churned out a couple of them, it becomes clear that the task is manageable and the anxiety level begins to decrease.

Of course, he hasn't attacked the U of C  and its Uncommon Application yet....I've been encouraging him to knock off a few of the easier ones in hopes of getting things moving and it seems that strategy is working. Keeping fingers crossed.:)

Riviera, are you sending them out, or waiting until the 15th? Right now I'm willing to part with some application fees just so that he fully senses progress being made, even if they aren't schools he would apply to if he gets in EA.

Or maybe I'm the one that needs to sense progress being made!:P

My D has also gotten faster at the essays. She whipped out a nice little "why Reed" in an hour or so. I think it's true that the anxiety level is the main obstacle.

The hardest one she has left is for Whitman, on contributing to diversity at Whitman, which shows they know they have an issue there. When you're a white suburban kid applying to a school populated with white suburban kids, it can be difficult to think of something intelligent to say.

Consolation,
He is sending all of them without waiting for the EA result.

My son has a fuzzy ranking for his college list -- he has 5 or 6 front runners -- and does not want to have a clear 1st choice until he gets all the admission results. A way not to be too disappointed by potential rejections, I think. So from the beginning, his plan has been to send all the applications and make a decision only at the end. He didn't even want to do EA but a lot of his friends were doing it and so he got convinced that it was a good way to jump start the application process.

Wow. So tomorrow it will be SIX MONTHS since my DD sent her EA application in.

And Thursday she'll find out whether she got in or not.

Time does NOT fly when you're having fun.

Gonna be a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG two days.

She won't hear on her other three schools for awhile (yeah, I know, NOT enough schools applied to to feel even remotely safe. I think I am more nervous than she is because I have a better big picture of how important all of this is while she is more focused on her one first choice). One notifies in mid-March, one in late March and one is rolling admissions but her audition is not until March 1.

Wow--that puts the January to March/April wait in perspective!

Is she applying to drama/MT programs?

No, just music programs ... in one case as a songwriting major, in two cases as a jazz vocal major and in one case just a straight LAC where she would major in music.

She LOVED doing MT at school but knows it's not something she would pursue beyond college (and her HS made it easier for her by doing ... yuck ... "Annie" this year so she didn't even try out for it, thereby gifting herself actual after-school hours to rehearse with her band and even do homework!!!)

Annie seems like a strange choice for a HS. Did they cast the HS kids as the orphans? That's a little weird.  Without them there aren't many parts! Our HS just did Once Upon a Mattress with a girl who was BORN to play Fred. :D

Argh, you're telling me! It's a new theatre teacher and the overall student body reaction to it was NOT what she was hoping (only 28 kids auditioned out of a 2000 students!) Last year when they did "Anything Goes," which you would assume that high school kids would be much LESS familiar with than "Annie," 100 kids came out for it ...

Orphans are, as far as I know, all HS kids.

Does your son play pit as part of his music program???

Edited for TMI :)

There is no orchestra or string program of any kind at the HS, only band, but he has played in the pit for any production where they need a violin. (One of them was Spoon River Anthology, for which he and the band director provided a fiddle/guitar accompaniment.) It's a nice way to participate.

My kids were both in Spoon River Anthology this past fall. What a coincidence! One of the students and his father did a guitar accompaniment.

That must have been really cool and more fun for your son than some of the pit situations where the sound is ... well, sub-par. I know in many cases the pit band is thrown together maybe two weeks before a show and sounds it. This sounds like it was a lot more appropriate for the production.

Does he play "Ashokan Farewell"? That is my favorite guitar/fiddle piece.

He does play Ashokan Farewell, although he isn't a fiddler. When he was about 13 or so, he played it at the memorial service of his first violin teacher, who died while he was still her student. (That was emotional....)

Unfortunately, I came down with the flu when they performed Spoon River Anthology, so I only ever saw part of a rehearsal. I've always like the poems, though.

Whohoo! DS just got the Dean's Honors Scholarship at Tulane ($36k/yr). The letter said it went to the top 50 of 10,000 applicants! Even if they expect a final count of 50 (meaning perhaps they sent offers to, say 250 ppl) thats still pretty great!

Does anyone happen to know if it was truly only offered to 50 students this year? In the past, they've offered 100-150 DHS's. I am unclear if they hope to have a final # of 50 DHS's or truly offered only 50 this year. Anyone know?

Awesome skibum! That is one chunky merit, congratulations to the whole family.

Here is our latest college app. results. ;)

Yesterday an 8X10 envelope arrived from Smith College. Everyone stared at it not believing a fat envelope arrived weeks earlier then expected. I was sure it was an acceptance even though it is a little early. Why else would they send an 8X10 fat envelope stuffed with things, right? She opened it up excitedly and the first line was:

"Now that you've submitted your application, the wait for news can seem endless. In the mean time, I thought you might enjoy reading the enclosed brochures."

Then a couple paragraphs about student life, clubs, sports and it ended like this:

"Learning about all there is to do at Smith may not make your wait any shorter but I hope it will make it more pleasant."

With best wishes,
[name of director of admissions]

My goodness.....why did they do that to her? :? She laughed it off saying, "It's like they teased me saying 'hey, we want you' and then said 'just kidding!'. The pamphlets are very cool, though. They make Smith look like such an incredible place. If they send it to everyone it seems like it would be cruel when they get rejected, don't you think? Oberlin has done the same thing, except their three letters (one from some parents to us, one from the person handling her app to her and one from a professor to her) came in regular sized envelopes so we knew they weren't an acceptance. I think that would be rough on a kid who is rejected, also. I mean, to tell them over and over how great you are and then not let them in. Why do they do it?

I suppose that yield is the obvious answer. My S got several large, expensive 4-color view books AFTER applying to the schools in question--and after the application deadline.  Brown was among them. Like Brown has to drum up more interest!

In Brown's case, I think they would be better off adding the $$ to their lagging endowment. It would still leave them with thousands of eager, highly-qualified kids to reject: the apparent goal of every admissions director. Their ranking wouldn't suffer.

I'm growing increasingly cynical, I admit. :(

outwest, I think the fat envelope probably did mean something--I seem to recall my children getting things like that before the decisions came, and they only came from schools they go into. In fact my recollection is that Colgate sent my D a calendar picture or something and then followed shortly after with an early notification/Alumni Memorial Scholar acceptance.

I hope I am right, and good luck to your daughter!
