According to his schedule, my son should hit the submit button by mid October for his first application (he has finally decided to do one application Early Action). His schedule is pretty tight with 2 applications completed in October, 3 in November (including the UCs), and 3 in December, but he wants to be done by Christmas.
So far, the common app part is half finished but he is still agonizing on the essay; he really hates talking about himself.

One of my son's potential schools does not seem to have record of his SAT or ACT scores. SATs and ACT were sent last February. SATs sent again in June, after taking the SAT II and retaking the SAT. Yet according to the email they sent today, they "have not received" them.
They say that they will also accept scores coming directly from the high school. I know that the packet of supplemental paperwork that the high school sent does indeed contain his test scores. According to USPS tracking, that packet was delivered yesterday. I guess we will wait until they get all of that paperwork logged in, before I have Son contact them and/or resend SAT scores. I'd rather NOT shell out another 10 bucks if I don't have to.
Good grief, it's practically a full time job keeping up on all this stuff.

I'm not sure we're keeping up with this here, but my D just finished her NMF application and essay. Mrs. Bumpy and I were getting annoyed that she waited until the due date (10/1) to turn it in - it somehow turned into a battle where she was bugged that we didn't trust her to finish when we've always given her free rein on homework, and we're thinking why wait until the last minute when there's money on the line.
So, she whips out a beautiful 500 word essay on Sunday morning in about an hour, then another for a scholarship contest she didn't even tell us about because "we would just nag her about it." There's definitely an unintended power struggle going on - I'm going to need a case of duct tape. I guess this is how we become clear that it's time she was on her own.

Yep. It helps to keep in mind that this is really an important developmental stage for our kids. They're taking their first tenative steps into putting themselves out into the world for inspection, and, by this time next fall, we won't be around to nag...ahem...remind them about all the important things they need to do to get by.
So, liberal applications of duct tape now will actually help them in the long run as well as the short term.
I myself have bought a king sized box from Home Depot to get me through the next few weeks with my son. If my voice sounds rather muffled some days, that's why.

Yes, the impulse to interfere is very strong. The annoying thing, of course, is my D is able to whip off a brilliant essay at the last minute better than I ever could, which makes me very proud, but on the other hand years of adulthood have shown that there's a lot of friction in the real world that kids don't allow for - what if she gets sick the day before an application is due?
I think what's different about the college apps is that the consequences of the child's choice seem like adult consequences, so where I might be OK with her screwing up an essay for English (which she never does), it seems nuts to screw up an essay which may cost real money down the road - so the duct tape must be on firmly.

I agree Bumpy (if I am understanding you right). The stakes are so very high in this college admission game. It isn't at all like a C on an English paper. I don't always think the kids realize the importance of what they are doing when applying. The money certainly isn't something they understand well. Duck tape is very important, but I do think a soft nudge or two is entirely called for.

| S told me that the NMF thing wasn't due until October 10th for him. We are in California. Is he right? Anyone know how this works?

| I think the due date is up to the high school. My D turned in her application and essay to the school, where they must have some paperwork to turn in with it. On the National Merit site they mention Sept. 14 or date set by the school, with the full packet from the school due Oct. 12th. So, they're not giving your S a lot of wiggle time.

Thanks. They aren't giving him a lot of wiggle room but at least you have given me some peace of mind .
He is a last minute guy. I am OK with this level of stress just not the level of stress where he already missed the deadline.

D has done everything to apply to 4 schools. She has been accepted at two with merit money, and we should hear by Dec.15th on the other two. I told her she could apply to a couple more for fun if she wants- maybe pick a school in a place that she likes, and we will take it seriously or visit if they offer her merit money.
Whew! I would never have thought she would be done by now.
I am going to leave her alone for a couple weeks before I remind her that two of them require special apps for the Honors college. :-)

Vderon-- are you going to post her acceptances in the official Acceptances 2008 thread?? We need to celebrate!

| Congratulations to your daughter Vderon. Like her, my daughter also was finished early, and it was wonderful to see her enjoy the rest of her senior year. She did consider sending out some extra applications, but in the end, she was very happy with her choices, and ended up at a wonderful school. Congrats again to your daughter for doing so well so early!

So we're looking ahead to the next step at my D's first-choice school now. She heads up there the weekend after Thanksgiving with a Friday interview and Saturday audition slot ... very glad that she has the interview first, since she thinks that will be a strong point.
We're heading up the afternoon before her interview so we're not sweating the travel delays, etc., and can relax at the hotel (yay for Marriott Miles). And Friday we'll stay in the immediate vicinity after her interview to have dinner and see a show there at the school's performance center that she is DYING to see, so it will be nice to be able to do something fun and take her mind off the audition for a little while.
She has to spend the rest of this week deep into dress/tech rehearsals for the school play ("Crimes of the Heart") so once she emerges from that she can concentrate for the next three weeks on her audition piece (oh, and PICK one ... she has to do a standard and had been hoping to do an original). Luckily her dad is her voice coach and so he can help her pick one, coach her on it AND record an accompaniment track for her. One stop shopping for free!
She still won't find out until Jan. 31 officially but is hoping she will have a good feeling for how it went by the end of that weekend. THEN I rip off the duct tape and we discuss the rest of her applications.

I finally got my S to send another application. So he's submitted 2 of the 11 or so. I'm trying to get him to knock off the ones that have a reasonably simple Common App supplement. I have hopes that he may get a couple more out this week...
This is torture. Expensive torture.

My daughter finally finished her application to SCAD yesterday, complete with the portfolio in Powerpoint on a CD, and it's sitting in its neatly addressed envelope waiting to go to the post office tomorrow

| Good luck to her! Did she photograph her portfolio artwork herself? I bet you are glad to see the stamp on that envelope.

Congrats to your daughter, Astrid. I know how much time getting the portfolio together must have taken. Good luck to her!
Consolation - my son has all the Common Apps, rec's, test scores and transcripts sent. But, right now, the supplements for only two of his schools are actually AT the schools. I am just kind of going with the flow right now, but in a few weeks, I'll start to look like this:

Thanks, Carolyn and scoop! No, my husband took some of the pictures and I also took some.
I realized I should have put one of those return postcards in the envelope, but didn't want to mess with it, so I paid the 75 cents or so extra and got delivery confirmation. This also tracks mail through the post office system, so we can follow every step of the envelope's journey
