If this isn't in the right place, or is inappropriate, Carolyn, please feel free to move it or 86 it but ...
My D, 15 minutes ago, hit the "send" button to officially submit her application to her first-choice school (EA, obviously, given the date here). She's sent the (quite extensive) on-line application (not a common application), her essay, her app fee  etc. and her school is sending her transcript and at least the one recommendation they have in hand so far this week, if it hasn't been sent already.
I know it seems a little crazy to have submitted her application in July, but the school very heavily weighs interview/audition, and those start in September so she'd like to get an early date for that (especially since they have a one month window, October, for a scholarship she's also applying for and she wants to have her audition before she submits her scholarship packet).
SO now we wait to hear back, hopefully, for an interview/audition date and meanwhile she finishes up the supplemental CD she wants to submit to try to get that to them before Labor Day.
Has ANYONE else's kids actually sent in apps yet??? Or are we truly loony?

| First, congratulations! That first application feels like such a relief, doesn't it? Second, if I remember correctly, lderochi's son had his first application out by this time last year as well...and an acceptance in hand by September. (lderochi, please correct me if I am remembering wrong). Heck, my son has had applications arriving every day saying "apply now" for months so there's nothing wrong with getting that "top" choice school out the door. | W00t to HijinksandSue's D!!! As I recall, my daughter had her first acceptance by late September-early October, but she didn't audition at that school until late January. Still, it was great to have that first one under her belt (and it's the school that she decided to attend).

My S submitted two applications this week, both of them online on the schools' websites. They were both rolling admissions, and very simple applications. He will give forms to his HS guidance counselor next week, and she will send the transcripts and GC forms. SAT scores have already been sent to the schools. In both cases, he should find out a few weeks after the completed application package has been received.
He submitted the first app without telling me. I had said to him beforehand that I wanted to go over all applications before he sends them, just to make sure all info is correct, that it always helps to have a second set of eyes to go over your app. But he sent it without having me look at it - it was late at night, he said he proofed it carefully, etc. Turns out there were a couple of errors in there, namely his GPA and class rank (because he was using an older version of his transcript). After I pointed this out, he took it upon himself to send a very well-written email to admissions, updating his application information. They replied, thanking him for the update and telling him that they look forward to receiving the official transcript, so it looks like all's well -- and it got through to S loud and clear that having Mom proof your application is probably a good idea after all.  (((edit: now I have to eat those words; see my next post))) He did have me proof the second application after that!
He also has two other applications mostly completed, but the schools are not accepting them yet anyway. Those apps are more complicated, with essays and personal statements, etc. He will also need to obtain teacher recs, in addition to the GC forms and transcript. School doesn't start until Sept. 4, and there is no rush because they are not rolling admissions, but I am so glad to see that he is working on them (without me even saying anything, no less!).
One of his schools has a special scholarship application due in mid-September. He will need to work on it pretty soon, and get teacher recs for that.
I would like to try and convince him into applying to the University of Oregon (our state school) to see what kind of scholarship they would give him, and as a backup financial safety.

I think it's an excellent idea to apply as soon as possible. Most of S's choices didn't accept applications during the summer. School starts here after Labor Day. He got all of his in early, which was so nice. By the end of December he had been accepted to several schools, so he already had options when his friends were still filling out applications.

Well, yes, very good recollection Carolyn. Several of my son's "good bet" schools accepted applications very early and would give a decision by the time senior year started. It was very nice to have a few early decisions in to schools that my son would have been happy to attend. Of course, these were schools that did not require teacher recs, which would have been hard to come by in the middle of summer!

My son submitted another application today. I strongly suggested he only submit part 1, and have a teacher proof his essay and answers to the Q&A section before submitting part 2 - but he went up to his room and submitted both parts. Said he proofread them himself. Arrgh!
Oh well, he will get in where he gets in. Not much I can do about it at this point. Duct tape, duct tape!

Well, would you believe that my son has actually finished ALL of his applications? He has applied to 5 schools using their online applications, and now he is done. All of the paperwork that his guidance counselor needs to fill out is in her hands, so whenever she gets that done and mails them in, his applications will be truly complete. Most of the schools are rolling admissions, so he will find out results before too long. One school releases decisions in late Feb/early March.
Who would have expected this last spring, when he was so adverse to even discussing this whole process? He was all excited today when he finished the last one, because he's done and just wants to move forward.
It'll be interesting to see if he comes up with any other schools down the road that he wants to apply to. If so, that's fine - there is plenty of time now!

| Wow is right!! My s is just now filling out his NMSF stuff, since that has a deadline looming, but hasn't even BEGUN any other apps. Wait, that's not entirely true. He got one of those "fill it out- no fee, no essay and you'll hear in 2 weeks" emails from a school in our state. He actually filled it out, but hasn't sent it in because he really doesn't know if he wants to use it as his safe school, and his HS actually limits the # of transcripts they'll send out before the start charging a fee (the $$ they collect goes to a fund for the teachers). So, I don't know if that counts or not. I think it took him about 10' to plug in some numbers. He hasn't done a "real" application yet, IMO.

My kids' HS also limits the number of transcripts - I believe they get 5 free before it starts to cost something ($2 I think?).
My son still has a scholarship app to complete by mid-September. He's not very motivated to do it, but I am (!), so I'll have to peel back the duct tape from time to time to remind him.

Wow- What scholarship app is due already? Didn't realize deadlines were so soon!
At my s's school, they are really strict about the # of applications students send. They encourage no more than 4-6. If you Wand to do 6-8, the last two requests go to the bottom of the pile. Any after 8 cost $50 a pop! I don't like the rule, but it is a private school and they get to call the shots.

| It's a full-tuition plus fees and a living stipend scholarship specific to Indiana University. Slim chance, but might as well try!

Can't believe it, but S just submitted his first app! When D applied a few years back it seems like everything was very last minute...I like this!
He finds out in 4 weeks!! Keeping fingers crossed here -

Well, my D has done everything on the common application except the essays. LOL She has pulled all the supplements for her current list and filled out the name, etc., but nothing else. She has had her recommendation requests ready to give the teachers since last week, but has hesitated from turning them in. She is making the decision whether to add two more LACs or not. She has looked at the UC application and balking at applying to them. That's why she is deciding about adding two more LACs. Carolyn suggested adding a couple where she may get $ so that the UCs aren't necessary, but that is very scary to do.
That's where she is at in the process. I am so impressed with the kids who have already hit that send button!
to Skibum: Why on earth do they limit the kids applications? My D is applying to 9 for sure and thinking to add two more.
