Hi, I just found out that I was waitlisted at Tufts. Does anyone know any statistics about Tufts and how many students get admitted off of the waitlist? Also, any advice on how to get off the waitlist?
Thanks in advance.

Warblers, as always, thank you.
al489, I'm sorry about Tufts waitlisting you. What are your other options at this time?
My advice for those placed on waitlists anywhere is:
1. Take a bit of time to catch your breath and decide if staying on the waitlist is right for you -- if you have another school you like just as much, it may not be.
2. Decide on your back up plan. Send in a deposit to another school.
3. If you decide to stay on the waitlist, talk to your guidance counselor about possibly calling the school for you to ask if there was something in particular that kept you from being admitted. At the same time, go back over your application and essays to see if there's anything that you feel they may not have really understood about you.
4. Write a letter or email directly to the admissions rep for your area. This should include a firm statement that you WILL attend if admitted, but, more importantly, it should also highlight/reiterate what you will offer to the university. If possible, don't just regurgitate what you said in your application essays. Try using some of the tips here: http://collegehunt.blogspot.com/2006/10/answering-why-this-college-essay.html#comments
5. If there is someone who can write a supplemental recommendation for you that will also fill in any blanks/important sides of you, ask them to do so. Choose wisely - you don't want a generic recommendation, but one from someone who really knows you and can explain why they'd be passing up a wonderful opportunity not to take you.
6. Keep in touch with the admissions rep with updates on your grades, awards, EC achievements, etc. But don't be a pest. No need to update every time you get an A on a test.
7. Try to turn most of your attention to which ever school you sent your deposit to - invest yourself in learning about them, and imagine yourself attending.
8. Hope for the best. Good luck!

Thanks for the hints, Carolyn. D just was waitlisted at Vassar. Don't know what she intends to do.
The other thing I'd suggest is to read the letter that comes with the waitlist very carefully. Vassar specifically said not to send supplemental recommendations, so we won't.

What happens to merit aid for students who are waitlisted? Is
there any saved for them or are they on their own if they are
admitted in May? And what happens if they've decided to enroll
somewhere else? Can they cancel that enrollment or do they lose their deposits?

Chevda,
Thank you for the reminder about reading the letter. Very important indeed. I'm sorry about Vassar.
Westernmom, if you are waitlisted, you should, of course, send a deposit to another school. Some schools allow you to refund the deposit if you are removed from a waitlist, at others the deposit will be non-refundable. Waitlisted students typically do not receive merit money if they're later admitted, and, at some schools (but not all), financial need can be considered in prioritizing who gets in.
I really, really hate waitlists. I think colleges do no one but themselves a favor when they put hundreds of kids on a waitlist when they know they'll probably only take a handful. In the meantime, those kids are left flapping in the wind, and the process goes on even longer. If I could change one thing about college admissions, I'd do away with ED deferrals and waitlists.

WestrnMom -- waitlisted students are unlikely to get merit aid, and they can only expect strong need-based aid at colleges that guarantee to met 100% need.
Even colleges that claim to be need-blind in admissions are usually need-aware when it comes to waitlist decisions, and they often will use the waitlist as a way of drawing in more full pay students.

| I think you have to check with the particular school. At least one that I know of said that there was little chance of aid if you're off the waitlist, and at least one said that students from the waitlist do get aid. Each school has its own pot of money and its own policies.

D has been waitlisted at Emory, her #1 choice. I personally am secretly relieved - because I don't know that it was the best place for her, and I also know that we would have had a hard time paying for it. A miracle in the financial aid dept was going to be necessary, and since that ain't gonna happen off the waitlist, I think she'll cut her losses.
D is disappointed, but not overly so - at least what she's showing us. I personally think deciding among 3 great choices is hard enough. (Applied to 6, eliminated 2 of them herself as her criteria changed.)

Binx, I'm sorry about the Emory waitlist.
WestrnMom, merit scholarships are not likely, but most schools will find some money for waitlist applicants. As Leftcoast notes, however, many schools make waitlist decisions based on a need-aware basis.

Carolyn, that last point is an important one--at least for us. S was also waitlisted at Northwestern. I told him he must be the waitlist king. He smiled, and told me to put him on the waitlist for dinner because he was hungry. At least he hasn't lost his sense of humor.
