Ahh, how wonderful to have the resources/contacts of a private school.

I suspect this was more the product of a creative counselor than a private school - my kids are in a private school with a good counselor ratio, but they never did anything this useful for the juniors.
I think this could work in any kind of school, and would have been helpful last year before we started blindly on this project. It shouldn't be so hard to set up in the admissions off season, which is presumably after April 1.

This isn't something just done at private preps. I did a similar event at my (public) high school for juniors and parents....and I got the idea from the head of college counseling at a large (public and urban) high school in the LA area.
Good college counseling happens at MANY different types of schools, not just private prep schools. And, for that matter, I've encountered students at some pretty exclusive privates who got some pretty awful counseling as well.

S's school did all of that and more, but I still believe the only way to make the most of the resources is to be informed yourselves, both students and parents, which is why this board is so invaluable. A counselor can teach students about the admissions process and make suggestions but only the student can determine which schools are a good fit. I like the idea of empowering students to take charge of their futures and use the counselors as a resource rather than depending on them for everything. Except for Carolyn! If she had been my son's college counselor I never would have needed to do the intensive research I did last year!

I absolutely, positively agree with you WestrnMom. Even if you have the world's best counselor, the best guide is always going to be yourselves, child and parent, working together and becoming as knowledgeable as possible.
