Congrats!!

It ws always my ubnnderstanding that you should wait, and list your school on the NMF form as "undecided" until later in the spring, and keep 'em guessin'. Plus, you can always change it. But if you send out one school, the other schools dont get your name on their "list" and it can potentially mess things up. I am not sure I am explaining it well. Hopefully someone else can.. Sorry

Thanks, skibum. That makes sense.

Carolyn, regarding letting Brown know, should it be in hard-copy letter form or can one send e-mail?

Just found out my D is officially a NMF :).  She went with "undecided" when named as a NMSF and will likely stay that way for a while longer.  I think only 2 of her schools offer merit money for NMF, and the amounts are not large enough to affect where she will attend.

Congrats to your D, EM! That's wonderful!

It does seem to be the thing to leave it "undecided." Now I just have to convince S that doing so--or putting another school there--won't hurt his chances with Brown.

Entomom - congratulations to your daughter!

Limner, at this point, I'd send it via email to the admissions rep for your area. Doesn't have to be a huge production. Just a "thought you'd be interested to know..." short and sweet email.

Oh, good. Thanks, Carolyn. S is definitely averse to any sort of production. :P Ah, motherhood.

So, Carolyn, would you recommend notifying colleges about NMF status even if they don't participate? And, regarding the colleges that do participate, would it seem odd to them that you're e-mailing them the information yet you haven't designated that college as first choice?

Or am I overthinking this? Either that or I'm counting my chickens before they're hatched, because D hasn't been informed yet!

Congrats, Wstrdg and son! S got his official note Friday, which was nice. Part of me kept wondering if the school board *might* have gotten it wrong.

I believe it can't hurt to drop a note to colleges  even if they do not offer a specific NM scholarship. Often they just like to have boasting rights that some # of NMSF attend.

Following up on a post from last yr by macnyc-

Good news-- DS #2 has been named a NMF!! Yay!! He put down "undecided" on his application when he sent it in -- because he is!! Here's my question: Should he notify the 4 schools he's applied to that he has been designated as a NMF or will  NM send this information on to all the schools? I recall that they send "lists" to teh schools, but if he didnt designate a school as a first choice, will the schools get a complete list of all NMF's , and if so, will they matche up the names to their applicants?

 Thanks in advance

Skibum, congrats to your son! My son had "undecided" on his NMF form too, and, as I recall, we got letters from schools he hadn't even applied to congratulating him. However, I think it's difficult to say for sure that a school will put 2 and 2 (or your son's NMF status and his app) together, so it's probably worth sending a letter notifying those schools that he's a finalist.

I want to add my congrats as well and share my experience.

Son #1 was a finalist and had a clear choice which was a NM participant.  He indicated that school as his first choice.  When decisions came out he was waitlisted at his first choice.  However, his second choice also participated in NM.  He was able to change his first choice school as long as he did it by a certain date in late April.  We faxed them the change and he was awarded $2000/year at the school he attended.

Son #3 was also a finalist.  He was less clear on where he wanted to go.  His first choice was not a NM school.  Two of his remaining schools did participate in NM.  We listed one of them as his top choice.  He was chosen to compete for a full tuition scholarship at this school -flown out there, etc.  I was surprised that he was chosen for this opportunity and I don't know if the fact that he had indicated that it was his first choice was a factor.  When all was said and done, he was offered a 1/2 tuition scholarship to this school along with $2000/yr for NM.  However, when it came time to send the deposit, son seemed to have cold feet.  We made a quick trip to the other NM school and he decided he wanted to go there.  I contacted NM to find out if he could change.  The deadline for changing was that day.  I needed to fax a form to them by 5:00 in order for the change to occur.  I was still nervous that the second school would award him the money since the first school already had awarded it.  However, everything worked out.  He was awarded $2000 / year to the school he is now attending.

If I had to do it over again, I would probably not indicate any school at first choice.  However, I don't know if that was one of the reasons he had the opportunity to try for a full scholarship at the first school.  One never knows these things.

The nice part is knowing that you CAN change things if you get it done by the deadline.  The deadline is sometime the third week in April and is after all the acceptances are out.  I believe that if you don't name a school at all you have even longer to name a first choice.

It didn't arrive until today, but my D got her NMF letter today. It must take longer to reach us out here in the boonies.

Most of the schools she's applied to don't participate in NM scholarships. I guess in that case you have to hope for the one-time $2500 award.

I just noticed that entomom's D found out about NMF last week, and they live in Oregon too - so maybe just our street is slow...

My D got yet another mailing from Arizona State on Friday about their NMF scholarships, so I was pretty sure this was coming.
