Izzy - it doesn't hurt to ask. I would suggest that you contact the financial aid office and tell them that you really want to attend Beloit, but your parents are unwilling to pay when so many colleges have given you better aid. Then fax them copies of the other awards.
The worst that can happen is that they say no.
If they want you, then they might increase your aid up to the $17,256 amount that appears to be their maximum. Probably no more than that, since they do have a specific policy. It still won't equal the awards you have from the other colleges -- but any extra money is obviously an improvement.

Thanks, leftcoast. I hope I can find a way to fax the copies because we're out from school for Easter break/third semester break (Romanian orthodox Easter is this Sunday) and my dad's office is closed this week and he's back home for a meeting for several months. Ah, but if there is a will, there is a way.
I do hope they increase it to 50% completely. Then I might be able to persuade my parents to consider it.
Ahhhh, I want Beloit so much. It's like this...tingle... And I do the whole smary smile whenever I think of it.

In the US, you can often get things faxed by going to a copy shop. You could also e-mail Beloit the details of the offers & send let them know you'll be sending copies of the letters via air (or express) mail for them to view if finding a fax machine is just too difficult. Good luck--hope things work out for you. Finances can make a difference & sometimes schools will make adjustments.

Or, if you happen to have access to a scanner, you could scan in the documents and email them.

Thanks, everybody!
I wrote Beloit the email and sent it, detailing how much my parents' expected contribution will be for each college and asked for a revision of the aid. I offered to fax/scan (I don't have a scanner but I'm sure a friend somewhere) the aid letters from other colleges. According to some friends, I also included some "embarrassingly emotional" paragraphs.
But Tom replied and *wheee* they're agreeing to give me $2,500 more.
So now the financial level is more even and my parents won't raise their eyebrows too high. *dances around*
THANK YOU ALL!!!! *giddy laugh* I'm almost ready to commit to Beloit. I have to imagine myself being a little more happier there than imaging how equally happy I can be at two places.

Yippee! Son just was notifed by USC that they'll be giving him an extra $2500/year as long as he meets 3.0 GPA & stays in the college of engineering & makes progress toward his degree. This is on top of the 1/2 tuition! Another woman I spoke with in at USC said they can also give him an extra $1000/year, but not sure whether it was superceded by this higher offer.

Thumper, I see your daughter made a choice. I hope the financial aid became more generous.

| Congratulations, Izzy, on getting results! I see you are in Romania, and wonder if you've been affected by the flooding? We have a friend there - he says things are just muddy where he is. (We are in Germany, near the Czech border. No flooding here, but I am getting tired of the rain.) Last edited on Sun Apr 30th, 2006 10:36 am by binx

Thanks, binx! I'm excited Beloit didn't rule me out and I'm excited to be heading there this August.
I'm in Bucharest, so we're not hit hard by the floods. The raining has mostly stopped, though the wind is still nippy. However, on the way back from school we drive over a small bridge that divides a river. Erosion occured so the little tunnel between the two parts were blocked, causing one "half" of the river to nearly overflow while the other half was empty... A little shocking that.
I'm glad, though, that we don't have monsoons like in Vietnam. The flooding was seriously bad, even in the city and especially near my house. (And we had a white car...)

I forgot to post an update here....As you all know DD is going to Santa Clara University in the fall. I did visit their finaid office, with the offers from USD and Salve in hand. They added $2500 in work study, and a $3000 Perkins loan (ok...it's a loan, but every bit helps). They had already given her a $6k SCU grant and the stafford loan.
I also went to the finaid office at U of San Diego, where I found the finaid person to have a "take it or leave it" attitude. Her response to me was abrupt, and basically said...tough...you'll have to pay the bill or your child will not be able to come here. So she didn't!!!

| Work study is a great addition--the jobs are often on campus & sometimes even in the child's major dept (child can search for the job which appeals--often 1st come/1st served). I loved the W/S jobs I had the two years I was able to get W/S as a transfer student at UOr. Glad your daughter was able to get these to make it easier for you & the family to finance her ed. It's always nice when you feel like the FAid office is trying to work with the family. I'm sure it must be tough tho--so many with so many needs & limited resources at FAid.

I took a phone message for my D from WUSTL yesterday, which I assume (am pretty sure) is an invitation to their scholarship interview weekend. She's visiting Rice, will return tonight and give them a call back on Wed. morning.
I would like to have her somewhat prepared when she calls them as there are logistic conflicts with interview weekends. All three that she has been invited to overlap by one or two days. I think she has pretty much decided against attending the Emory Scholars, so that leaves WUSTL where she might get nothing, a partial or a full tuition scholarship and UMichigan where she is guaranteed a full ride. She has visited WUSTL and liked the campus and students, she hasn't visited UMichigan and her main concern is the large size. She has committed to UMichigan as she needed to give them an answer by Feb 9, and she didn't get invitations to the others until later.
Unfortunately UMichigan and WUSTL overlap by two days, so unless they are very lenient, she may be out of luck. I'm thinking that she should explain that she had to commit to UMichigan before she found out about WUSTL and say that she is still very much interested and that she would be willing to interview another time or take a partial scholarship w/o an interview if that's a possibility. What do you all think? Any ideas on how to keep the doors open on both schools?

Entomom:
Watch out! Do not tell Wash U. that your D made a COMMITMENT to Michigan.
First off: Michigan request (prior to the May 1 deadline) was a basic no-no, it was intended to cut off future possibilities.
Second: However Wash U (and Rice and other schools) could consider that your D is no longer eligible simply because she made a commitment to another school.
Wash U (S3 graduated in '87) is a very good school and as your D knows a terrific campus etc. Rice is a terrific school as well, (but is in Houston, a city that I dislike, even though my three eldest grandchildren were born in that city).
Personally, your D has great choices, I would suggest going to Wah U (for whatever time available and postponing the Michigan visit (claim illness on a parent or whatever, after all Michigan has a commitment from your D, they should be flexible and recognize that not all persons can meet their planned schedule).
Good luck as you and your D become (hopefully) expert jugglers!

Just want to say congrats, Entomom. I realize that some of this represents hassles, but what a nice problem to have. She really can't go wrong. Whatever decision you make, just grab it and go. Don't worry about what ifs. (Easy for me to say.)
J-dad - I'm guessing she meant commit to attend Michigan's scholarship weekend, not commit to attend the school.
We had a similar, but less painful, conflict recently. When D applied to St. Olaf, and sent her music CD, she knew that she could be invited to audition in person the same weekend as All State. At the time of applying, neither was a certain option - she might not get invited by St. Olaf, and she might not qualify for All State. However, both happened. Fortunately, she is not applying as a music major, so is allowed to audition by DVD. I am guessing the DVD will lower her chances of getting any money, but she had to commit to All State several weeks before she heard from St. Olaf. She could back out of All State, and lose the money we already paid, but she really wants this one-time experience. It would cost a lot to go to St. Olaf (last minute tickets, etc) for a limited chance at money. So she did the DVD. We hired someone to make it - this past Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, D has an ear infection and sinus infection (diagnosed yesterday - all we knew on Sunday was that she'd had a fever for 2 days). She looks a bit lethargic in the DVD - not her normal sparkly self. Settled for a less than perfect take because she ran out of steam. And she has a bright red nose, to boot.
Sometimes all you can do is all you can do.

jocelynDAD,
Thanks for the input! The Feb 9 deadline was to commit to attending the interview session, not to taking the scholarship. My assumption was that they do that both for planning reasons and to block out other schools like Emory and WUSTL that notify later in the month. My assumption was that that's "legal"??
When they called yesterday it was kinda awkward when I told them she wouldn't be back until Tue. night, but I did not say that she was at another college . This is very tricky, on one hand I want her to be truthful, but I know that they plan these things to reduce the options kids have. I don't think it's a coincidence that these mandatory interview dates conflict, it's really a way of making kids commit early without the schools breaking the May 1 rule.

Hi Binx,
We cross-posted . Thanks, yes this is very much like what happened to your daughter. Sounds like she made a good decision, the best of both options and no regrets. I think my D will do the same once it comes down to it, I'm just a little conflicted about exactly how to proceed. Trying to keep as may options open as possible as we wander through this maze!
