I've been surfing the web trying to find unusual scholarships, and thought I'd pass along a  few links that might be helpful to someone.

If your child will be majoring in music, or is talented in music, you might want to look through the list of music-related scholarships maintained by the New England Conservancy of Music (most are not specifically for NECM): http://www.newenglandconservatory.edu/financeYourEducation/musicscholarships.html

UCLA maintains a list of scholarships related to different ethnicities - from Armenian to Polish here:
http://www.college.ucla.edu/UP/SRC/ethnic.htm

York College had an extensive, up to date list of scholarships and contests for both high school students and current college students on its website (again, not exclusive to York):
http://www.kings.edu/admissions/privatescholarships.htm

And, there's a nice searchable database of scholarships that you can sort by association type, unions, ethnicity, geographic region, etc. here:

http://www.acinet.org/acinet/scholarshipsearch/ScholarshipCategory.asp?searchtype=category&nodeid=22

And, I'm sure most already know about it, but I'll repeat it anyhow just in case: Fastweb has a searchable database of scholarships as well, and will alert you to scholarship deadlines:

http://www.fastweb.com

If anyone has any other good "lists of scholarships" or places to look for them, please feel free to share.

Re:  Music scholarships -- this listing is great.  There are several on there that my S has participated in already.  For music majors, there is more to be won than just / only money.  My S enters many things simply for the audition experience.  When/if he wins or places, it also looks nice on his resume, as well as giving that fragile musician ego a boost.

We keep a watch on this site, as well:  http://www.myauditions.com/

And this one:  http://www.afm.org/public/musicians/scholarships.php

Thanks for the leads, carolyn. there's a fun website, http://www.brokescholar.com, but I can't vouch for its helpfulness with the scholarship search.

This one is limited to students in Idaho, Utah, Texas, Colorado and Virginia for engineering majors:

Carolyn, there are some competitions that offer scholarships to winners.

One example is the Intel Science Talent Search:  http://www.intel.com/education/sts/overview.htm .  This may not  be the best URL.

Here's a Yahoo directory of national K-12 Academic Competitions in debate, science, math, and other areas.  I have no idea how exhaustive this list is, and haven't checked to see which ones may offer college scholarships.

http://dir.yahoo.com/Education/Academic_Competitions/K_12/

It might be interesting if someone could put together a list of such competitive prizes by field (geography, science, math, debate, music, etc.). Of course there are both national and state level competitions, which complicates compiling a list.  For example, my son won a small scholarship ($2000) from the Detroit Free Press for winning the John S. Knight state competition in debate in Michigan: http://www.themifa.org/html/scholarships.html

Mackinaw, thanks for those great links. And, I have duely noted your idea to compile a list. I've added it to my never-ending list of things to do. :P
