| I just re-read the previous postings on this subject, but I'm still confused. D got called down to guidance today and found out she is one of 11 students in her school (about 370 in her class) that qualified to participate in the National Merit Scholarship program. Hurray! They gave her a date by which she has to bring them the names of two schools. Is choosing wisely very urgent at this time or is that only if you are named a finalist? Should I have her check whether the art schools that would be her first and second choice even participate in that program? If it is not available on the website, is it appropriate to ask her first choice school if they participate and choose other schools to list if they don't? She really doesn't have a list at this point other than a few art schools. Thanks for any help you can give.

| It's not very important at this point which schools she selects. Naming two schools means that NM sends her scores and basic info to those colleges; whether they decide to contact her after that is up to them. She might want to select her safeties, since they're more likely to be interested (i.e. possible merit $ down the road) and to track interest. Last edited on Fri May 23rd, 2008 02:10 pm by warblers

| Thanks. Good point about the safeties. I didn't think it was too important at this point, other than to get her name in there.

I'm not sure that's exactly true -- unless it has changed, USC used to give a rather automatic merit scholarship to any NMF who had listed USC as his/her first choice in the spring listing. I think there were some others that did the same, and you could probably find a list on the other board. If your student is potentially interested in any of those schools it might be financially helpful to consider the order in a bit more detail. (I'm not sure that there is much of any point in putting down any school that doesn't give merit scholarships.)
Congratulations!

There's a difference between listing two schools for the referral service and naming a final school. D listed two schools that sent her brief letters, but she still received scholarship mailings from other colleges. Ultimately she was waitlisted at the two referral schools. She designated Carleton as her final choice sometime in mid-April and received their national merit scholarship.

| Ds got a letter from National Merit Scholarship Corporation a month or two ago. It means that he at least made the Commended level (which I'd already figured out). We put the letter someplace...now I remember it had a place to list two colleges. Oh, well...

| The letter my daughter received says that when she lists the two schools, each will not know about the other. If this is the case, how could they know who you had listed as first choice? Perhaps this listing (eligible) is different than in the fall when your designation is more specific. I'm having a look at the list now, thank you for that link.

If a student has some clear first choices at this point, I'd recommend listing them. While it may not guarantee admissions, it is a good way to show a bit of demonstrated interest early in the game, and that *might* if combined with other shows of interest, be a tipping point down the line at some schools. Other than that, Firefly is correct: at most schools the choice that matters for scholarship consideration is after you have entered the finalist round.
By the way, my son received a nice package of information from one college acknowledging that he'd listed them on the NMS spring form. The other (the school he will be attending in the fall) never acknowledged that he'd listed them, nor did they send him any additional information. Still, since I know they do weigh demonstrated interest to some extent, it certainly didn't hurt that he listed them.
