| From what I've heard, generally, it's tough to get merit money as a transfer, but I've heard it does happen from time to time. Would appreciate any info anyone has on this, as my D wants to transfer to enter as a sophomore--anywhere but Hawaii.

Again, Mills College to the rescue. LOL It's a great school!
They offer merit scholarships to transfer students and take transfer students after one year, too:

If she doesn't know what she wants to major in, it is fine. You do not declare until the end of Sophomore year, so she'd have a year to try things.

Application deadline for transfer in the Fall: March 1st

| Thanks for the thoughts. She would prefer a co-ed environment, as many of her best buddies are male. Will mention Mills for her to consider--she does love CA.

| Actually, merit scholarships for transfers aren't all that rare. What are rare are LARGE merit scholarships (i.e., full tuition or more than a few thousand dollars) for transfers. In addition to Mills, two other west coast schools that have decent merit scholarships for transfers (but both are under $10,000) are Linfield College in Oregon and Puget Sound in Washington. There are many other colleges out there with merit money of some kind for transfer students as well. I'd particularly focus on schools in the mid-west and south, as many seem to have at least some money for transfer merit scholarships. I would also definitely not rule out all-female schools, as many of them besides Mills also offer some transfer scholarships (i.e, Agnes Scott, Hollins, etc.). Don't discount Mills because of the all female thing. Mills has on-campus coed graduate schools, there are plenty of guys. My D had a boyfriend by the middle of her freshman year at Mills. So, the all female part is rather moot there. She had guys in many of her music classes. It also has cross registration with Berkeley (and use of their facilities, etc.) where there are plenty of men around. My D did not want an all female school, either and visited only because of their strong music department. She changed her mind once she saw the reality of Mills. It is in Oakland, but centrally located to all the Bay Area has to offer. A 15 minute BART ride gets you to the heart of San Francisco. And, it has some of the best scholarships for transfer studnts that I can think of.
Good luck!
