A family connection of mine is divorced and has little contribution from the ex. She knows that most state schools require the FAFSA but don't require the CSS/Profile. Are there any private schools that require only the fAFSA form ? Thanks!

There are very few schools that use the Profile. They should be listed on the College Board site. If a school isn't on the list, it doesn't require it.

WestrnMom is correct, only a relative few LAC's require the Profile.
Some that do are: St Olaf; Illinois Wesleyan; Susquehanna.
These schools only require the FAFSA, although some might require their own school financial aid form in addition to the mandatory FAFSA.
Augustana (ILL); Centre; Earlham; Juniata; Lake Forest; Lawrence; Washington; McDaniel

My relative told me they all seemed to require the Profile, so when I checked on it, the first 3 LAC's did in fact require the Profile. (You named one of them, and one of the others I checked was Loyola of Maryland).
But thanks for pointing out this was a strange aberration, to have picked out the few who do!
So thanks for sharing the good news !

| One thing for your connection to be careful about, though - schools that don't use the Profile may have their own forms and requirements for non-custodial parental support. Once she's narrowed down the list to non-Profile schools, she should review the FA websites and/or contact the FA offices to disuss her situation.

Most of the highly selective private colleges that promise to provide need-based aid do require the Profile. It is true that the vast majority of colleges don't ask for it -- but they don't promise to meet a student's need either. So they will give good aid packages to the students at the very top of their applicant pools, but gap the others, often giving loans only with no grant aid.

Except for Grinnell, all seven other schools my D is applying to require both the fafsa AND the profile. Grinnell has their own form that is very similar to the Profile. The only thing I can think of (about why they don't just use the profile) is that you have to pay to submit the profile, but their form is free as is the fafsa. Grinnell is also 100% free to apply to, also. I think that's nice. It annoys me that I have to pay for the Profile.
It seems to me that the Profile is widely used, contrary to the above posts!

Beloit also doesn't require the profile, but they do have their own financial aid app in addition to the FAFSA. Some other schools, in addition to those JD mentioned above, that I know don't require the profile are: U of Redlands, Sewanee, Calvin, Hope, Hendrix, Milsaps, DePaul. And, of course, *most* publics don't require it either. But, As noted above, there are only about 200 or so schools that require the profile. You can get a complete list on the collegeboard.com site, and then work from there.

Hayden, is your friend worried that the Profile schools will require forms and funding from the -ex?
If that's the problem, there may be a way around it. A friend of mine is divorced and had received no support from her -ex for several years. In fact, he'd left the country. Her daughter's top choice school required the Profile, so my friend called their financial aid office and explained the situation. They said that all she needed to do was sign a sworn affidavit that the -ex was no longer providing support and send it in to the financial aid office.
It may have helped that my friend couldn't locate her -ex, so there's no way she could have gotten him to fill out the forms. In any case, it's worth a call to the financial aid office to find out if they can make an exception. My friend's daughter was accepted at the school and received a large aid package.
